ENGLISH SUGAR BEET

The sugar beet industry, which a few years ago was only in the experimental stage in Britain, has lately been progressing by leaps and bounds, and this year a particularly lino crop of roots has been raised. Large consignment arc ready in the hands of the sugar factories, and crushing shows a large percentage of sugar. At the Cantley factory, in Norfolk, 1500 tons of beet are being crushed daily, and Britain alone has grown more than 1 fi.Ooo acres of beet this year. There are now 14 beet sugar factories in various parts of the kingdom, while more than 120,000 nr-es are devoted to beet-growing for sugar purposes. Statistics show' that Britain is annually becoming more self-supporting in ‘ the matter of sugar supplies.
