RETURNED SOLDIERS

ANOTHER STORMY MEETING POLITICAL ACTION FAVOURED • • (Peb United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, April 28. The annual meeting of the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association last night was exceedingly stormy. As soon as the meeting opened attention was called to two detectives in the hall, and strong objection was voiced to their presence. The chairman (Sir George Richardson) said that the detectives were not present by invitation. He would like them to leave, but could not order them. Eventually the. detectives walked out. There was much discussion on the balance sheet, and eventually it was decided that it should lie on the table for two months, and then be dealt with by a special meeting, and that meanwhile the auditor’s report be published. Among the remits passed for the Dominion Conference was one that the R.S.A. be formed into a political body and that a system of block voting at elections be organised. Commenting on this to-day, Sir George Richardson expressed regret that it had been passed, as’it would deprive the association of many members and would alienate-public sympathy. He also said that he was unable to understand why a small section of -returned men were trying to create a prejudice against the former officers, who had done splendid work for .their comrades.
