CONCILIATION COUNCIL

COAL MINERS’ DISPUTE A dispute between the Kaitangata Coal Company and the Kaitangata Coal Miners’ Union came before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) yesterday. The assessors were: For the employers, Messrs F. Carson and R. S. M, Sinclair; for the union, Messrs R. Kavanagh and James King.

An agreement was reached between the parties on the lines of the old award, the only alteration being a reduction of 5 per cent, on the present rate of wages, and provision was made for the supply of tools and explosives to workers at present prices. The term of the award was left to the Arbitration Court to fix.

SHIPWRIGHTS’ DISPUTE An adjourned dispute between the Port Chalmers Marine Repair Work* (Port Chalmers) and the Port Chalmers Shipwright Co. (Carey’s Bay) employers, and the Dunedin and Port Chalmers Union of Shipwright Workers came before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) yesterday morning. The assessors were: For the employers, Messrs R. A. Ward and R. Leftwich; for the union, Messrs P. Barr, J. Fitzgerald and J. Shanks. The only questions left in dispute were those of wages and dirt money. After a brief sitting the following clauses were agreed to:— Wages; The minimum rate of wages for journeymen shipwrights and boatbuilders shall he 2s per hour. Dirt Money: (1) Men employed re-, pairing hoppers and doors of dredges in dry dock and at repair work under engine room,. stokehold, or funnel floor, and in coal bunkers or overhauling steering gear chains or caulking or repairing the bottoms of punts shall be paid Is 3d per day extra; (2) no shipwright working with pumraice, charcoal, or silicate in connection with insulation work in any confined place shall be paid 3d per hour extra while so employed; (3) for exceptionally dirty work, each job shall be considered on its merits; (4) for work aloft, above the main rigging, Is 3d per day extra shall be paid for each day or part of a day a shipwright is so employed. ■ The agreement reached by the parties will now operate as an industrial agreement.
