THE PALMERSTON MAYORALTY
1 TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The statement has recently been made that only in exceptional circumstances should any man be given a second term as Mayor, and never in any circumstances a third. Still less, therefore, a fourth, and this rule applies even in cases where the candidate is in the prime of life and actually engaged in business. Palmerston electors may well remember this. A company recently formed has among its shareholders a number of Palmerston residents. They are, in my opinion, sensible, clear-sighted men. They have voluntarily appointed Mr Galloway secretary of the company, and one of the direct tors. Electors might .with advantage note that too. It is not every town m New Zealand that ig privileged to be able to vote for a candidate who is an English gentleman. Palmerston has already been given such an opportunity, and a large majority rejected it. I believe that in the whole wide field of qualifications there is none higher. None. Again, note. The council is to be unchanged. lam told that some council-, lors would gladly stand out. Why, then, wag the excellent example of our sister town, Waikouaiti, not followed, and the number of councillors reduced? Why did our very experienced Mayor not see to this? Notices state; “All stock to be driven the back road.” Horses clatter and cows meander complacently through the heart of the town and across the main highway nearly every day of the year. Does our Mayor approve of this? If a fatal accident resultg shall the Mayor and councillors be morally responsible or shall they not? The manufacture and sale of “hooch” has been going on in Palmerston for years. What has our Mayor been doing? On the occasion of the last three mayoral elections, or immediately after, it has been disgustingly obvious that individuals have been sick about the streets. Where do our electors stand? Women wore to “ purity politics.” What have " they done, and what are they doing—in Palmerston? —I am, etc., Ivon A. Boston.
