POT HUNTING

TO rui£ EDITOR Sir, — I wish to congratulate “ AntiPothunter ” on his letter in this morning’s Daily Times. There is, without the shadow of a doubt, a - certain class of bowler who will use unsporting methods of trying to win a tournament. In the last tournament in Dunedin a bowler, well known in the city—whom we will call “ Bowler No. One,” entered for the Easter tournament (Doubles and Rinks). The day before the tournament started he took his bowls for a practice game on the green on which he was drawn to play and also got the strength of the preen. Thanks to the watchful eye of one of the club officials, be was told to take his bowls off the green and wait until* the next day. This was only right and proper. The same bowler was also playing in a rink game to decide who should be the green winner. This rink nifet one to which it was a matter of indifference whether it won or lost, but it did matter to “ Bowler No. One,” and, to make sure of winning, he had the assurance and audacity to ask the skip of the opposing side to lose for him! It is pleasing to relate that he received no satisfaction and was beaten into the bargain. I main tain that bowlers of bis type are not in any sense of the word sportsmen but are simply out-and-out pot-hunters. When a player of his calibre wins it is no honour to himself or to the club be represents, and the sooner that type of player is given to understand that bowling tournaments are promoted to bring bowlers together for enjoyment, good-fellowship, and the spirit to win, if possible, by sporting methods, the sooner will the game be a pleasure to all to play.—l am. etc., Dunedin, April 27. Lorca Head.
