KUROW NOTES
There was.a very representative gathering. of Kurow residents at a valedictory function in honour of Constable J. Devine, who is leaving to-day on transfer to Kimbolton, in the North Island. Mr J. MThail presided, and the customary toast list was honoured. Glowing tributes ■were paid to Mr Devine's popularity and worth, and, on behalf of the residents, the chairman presented Mr Devine with a canteen of cutlery, with all their good wishes for his future happiness and prosperity. Mr Devine suitably acknowledged the presentation, and a cordial welcome was extended to his successor, Constable Moodie. Vocal and instrumental items added much to the pleasure of the function. Messrs Wilson and Butler have reported the discovery of a large seam of lignite coal about three miles from Kurow in the Awakinc* basin. It is understood that the coal is of good quality and that the mine will be worked immediately after the holidays.
