(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, December IS, SWIMMING CARNIVAL. A bighly-successful swimming and diving carnival was staged at the Balclutha public baths yesterday in truly ideal weather. Upwards of 30 members of the Kiwi and Dunedin Swimming Clubs attended,' and their performance in the water proved a revelation to many of the spectators. The programme was made up of swimming and diving competitions, and in addition the visiting swimmers, including several New Zealand champions, gave several special exhibitions of fancy swimming and diving, while the burlesque element was not overlooked. Following Were the results: — Open diving: P. Mathieson 1, Misses D. Foote and 0. Ferguson (equal) 2. Youths Handicap (33 1-3 yards, local): G. M'Auslan 1, Waters 2 (four started). Girls’ Handicap (under 15, open, 33 1-3 yards): Miss Leedston 1, Miss Ferguson 2, Miss Olds 3 (five started). Invitation Scratch Race (33 1-3 yards): First heat— Thomas 1, P. Mathieson 2, Pickard 3 (six started). Exhibition swim, illustrating the breast and backstrokes and crawl: Pear Son 1, Kerr and Burns (equal) 2. Diving (boys under 16): Ferguson 1, J. Gould 2. Men’s Scratch Race (stroke optional): Burns (crawl) 1, Kerr 2, Pearson 3 (won by a yard). Ladies’ Handicap (15 and over, 06 2-3 yards): M. Bolton 1, Mrs E. C. Isaacs 2, Miss Ferguson 3 (time, 21sec). Second heat Invitation Scratch Race; D. M. Poynter 1, Durand 2 (time, 20sec); third heat — Miss C. J. Lceden 1, Mis s M. Taylor 2, P. Mathieson 3 (time, 23soc); fourth heat—D. Pickard 1, D. Durand 1, Kerr 2, Taylor 3 (won by a touch, time, 83sec); final —Mathieson 1, Thomas 2, Durand 3 (time, 77 4-ssec). Ladies’ Handicap (33 1-3 yards): Mrs Isaacs 1, Miss Ferguson 2, Miss -Olds 3. Open Handicap (100 yards): First heat —Pickard 1, Burns 2, Newall 3 (time, 80sec); second heat— P. Mathieson 1, Gillies 2, Kerr 3 (time, 72scc); final —Mathiesmi 1, Newall 2, Burns 3 (time, 74 l-ssoc). Relay Handicap (133 1-3 yards); Bachelors’ Club 1, Glaxo 2, Kelly Gang 3 (time, limn 31sec). Cigarette Race, local, won by Waters. Messrs Thomas and Mathieson gave a splendid display of plain and fancy diving, and backstroke swimming, and there was an equally good display of lifesaving by Misses Bolton and C. Lang. Misses Foote, Ferguson, and Mrs Isaacs exhibition of standing, running, and high diving was distinctly good, while a burlesque life-saving act by three members of the Kiwi Club evoked much laughter. Three started in a Blindfold Race, which was won by D. M. Poynter (an ex-Bab clutha boy, now a member of the Kiwi Club, Dunedin), with Pearson (Dunedin) second. The closing item of a highly entertaining programme was an esjhibition of water polo by the visitors. Mr A. Wilson (president of the Kiwi Club), in a brief speech, thanked the Balclutna Club for its hospitality, and expressed a hope that the exhibition given by the visitors would have the effect of bringing on local swimmers, and also that the club would affiliate with the Otago Centre. He was pleased to see such a good attendance of the public, and hoped that next time the visitors would be able to introduce even more novelties than they had that day —(Applause.) Mr R. B. Lothian, president of the Balclutha Club, heartily thanked the members of the Kiwi and Dunedin Clubs for the unique display they had given, and com-

mented on the spirit of true sportsmanship that had actuated them. Mr E. C. Isaacs (secretary of the Otago Swimming Centre and also of the Kiwi Club) made an able announcer, and the judges were Messrs F. Nicol and W. F. Sutton, of Dunedin. A medal was presented to Mr P. Mathieson at the tea that followed for gaining most points in all events, and a similar trophy was awarded to Mrs Isaacs for most points in the ladies’ events. In the evening a dance was held in St. Mark’s Hall in honour of the visitors. CRICKET. Balclutha defeated South Otago High School on the Balclutha ground yesterday. Balclutha made 228 runs for four wickets, when the innings was declared closed, the top scorers being T. Gold (109 not out), Henderson (88), Baxter (33). High School made only 89 in a full innings, onlv two batsmen reaching double figures—James (18) , Doak (17)., L. Guest took three wickets for the School and Green one. Henderson and Lennox were the chief destroying agents for the winners. SOUTH OTAGO BOWLING CENTRE. A meeting of the South Otago Bowling Centre was held in the Balclutha Club’s pavilion on Saturday night, when Mr E. Kansome presided over a good attendance, the delegates present being: Messrs P. Farrrell, J. M'Namara, J. Henderson, R. Buchanan, C. O’Hara, T. Barron, W. Jefferson, H. Little, and R. Culbert (sec-, rotary). Waropa notified that Mr O’Hara had been appointed to represent that club on the centre, and Mr O’Hara was extended a cordial welcome by members. Several clubs forwarded affiliation fees and levies for the current year. It was decided that the rink tournament be held on Saturday, February 11, 1933. It was decided that Balclutha, Kaitangata, and Stirling greens be used, and that Balclutha green this year be tne main green. It was resolved that in the event of three greens being used the semi-finals and final be played on Balclutha greeen, the rinks to be changed round for the purpose; also, that the same prizes as last year—viz., £5 and certificates for first and £3 for second-bo awarded. The matter of a third prize was held over until the entries closed. It was decided that in the event of a tie in the final only one extra head be played. Entry fees were fixed at £1 a rink, these to close on Tuesday, February 7, at 7 o’clock. The semi-final will be of 16 heads. It was resolved that next Aieetmg be held on February 7, when the champion of champions, to be played at Kaitangata this vear, will be arranged, as also will the match with Dunedin Centre at Bal-

clutha on March 4. As it was the final meeting of the year the president extended seasonal greetings to members, and expressed best wishes for a-pleasant holiday. These were heartily reciprocated. It was decided that the interclub fixtures be recommenced on Saturday, January 21, 1933.
