ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A DOUBLE DROWNING (Pek United Press Association.) WHAKATANE, December IT. A double drowning fatality occurred late yesterday afternoon in the Whakatane River at Poroporo, when Willie (“Dummy”) Savage, aged 35, lost his lifp in attempting to rescue his eon, aged seven, who got into difficulties while bathing with other Native children. The father dived, fully clothed, and it is surmised that he was caught in a snag. The bodies have not yet been recovered. MOTOR CAR OVERTURNS THREE PERSONS INJURED. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, December 17. Three occupants of a car that overturned in trying to avoid a van at an intersection were admitted to hospital to-day. Mrs Mary Elizabeth Smith, an elderly woman, was seriously injured on the head. Mrs Victor A. Smith and Marjorie Smith, aged 12, received minor injuries. BODY FOUND HANGING (Per United Press Association.) MASTERTON, December 18. A young man named Alan Ashley Benge, aged 18 years, was found hanging to-day outside the bathroom window of a whare on Mr J. A. Toogood’s station at Homewood, where he was employed as a farm labourer. The deceased had apparently just had a bath and was naked when the body was found. The parents reside in Sydney. POSTAL CADET INJURED Edward Skipper, aged 22, a postal cadet, residing at Ranfurly, was admitted to the Hospital at 9.45 yesterday suffering from a fractured right leg received as the result of being thrown from his motor cycle when the machine skidded in some loose metal near the Brown House.
