PENINSULA SHOW

GOOD DISPLAY OF STOCK DAIRY CATTLE A FEATURE Beautiful weather conditions favoured the annual show of the Otago Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Society at Portobello on Saturday. As a result ot this the gate takings showed a satisfactory increase, and the day was a distinct success in every way. The entries were not quite as numerous as was the case last year, when the society staged one ot the "best exhibitions of stock in us history. , . , . As was only to be expected in a district in which the main industry 10 dairying, the principal interest during the day centred around the cattle rings, where some splendid representatives of the live breeds of cattle for which provision was made on the catalogue, were judged. The Jerseys, Friesians, and Ayrshires which came forward were a credit to the district, and one of the judges expressed the opinion that it was a pity • that more cattle breeders from the Peninsula could not be induced to enter the pick of their stock in the Otago A. and P. Society s Summer Show at Tahuna Park. The arrangements for the day were all that could be desired. In this connection mention must be made of the work of the secretary (Mr J. Seaton), to whose industry and enthusiasm much of the success attended the show was due. The Otago Peninsula is known througnout the province and further afield as affording pasture to some of the finest Jersey cattle in the Dominion. In view of this fact it might have been expected that the entries in the Jersey section would have been larger. Perhaps the formidable show ring record of several of the exhibitors tended to discourage a number of dairymen in the district from bringing their cattle into a ring where they would be matched against Jerseys which had carried off honours at the largest shows in the country. What-

ever may have been the reason, competition was confined to entries from three or four breeders. The outstanding exhibitor was Mr J. Hellyer, who, in addition to winning the cup for most points in Jersey cattle, secured the championship award among the females. The champion bull was shown by Mr P. Hellyev. Others who shared in the prize, money were Messrs G. Donaldson, W. A. Seaton, B. Harris, A. M’Gregor, and J. J. Purdie. The judge stated that the entries were all well brought out and in excellent show order. There was not one inferior animal in the section, but the bulls were particularly good. The Friesian section was a strong one. Hero, ,as in practically all the cattle sections, the competition for the first awards wag keen, and the entries were satisfactory. The championship among the females went to a two-year-old heifer in milk shown by Mr J. Cross. She was i a very nice type of Friesian, but was a little lacking in condition, though this may have been due to her heavy milking qualities. If this defect were remedied she would, in the opinion of the judge,, be able to hold her own in classes in which much stronger opposition would be encountered than was the case on Saturday. The yearling heifers were a good lot, arid Mr A. C. Miles’s first prize winner waa really outstanding. The bulls were all fair types of Friesians. The championship here went to the winner of the two-year-old class, belonging to Mr A. J. Ings, a bull which was placed first in the claeri for at the Otago A. and P. Society’s show last year. This animal, said the judge, would also be more attractive in show appearance u carrying a little more condition. , The entries among the Ayrshires were the best in the show. Among the dairy farmers of the Peninsula this great milking breed has maintained its popularity, and the entries which came forward on

Saturday were a credit to the breeders. So high, indeed, was the level of quality I reached that the judge commented that it ! was a pity that some of the exhibitors could not be persuaded to show their stock at Dunedin, as a number ot trie animals which came before him were quite good enough to hold their own against ! the competition which would be expertI enced at the metropolitan show. Ihe I dry cow class, in which first prize went to Mr J. C. Aitken, with Mr J. J. Dick taking second and third tickets, was outstanding. and the heifer classes were also particularly good. Mr Dick s first prize ! winner in the class for cow in, milk was 1 a fine type of Ayrshire, but some of the ! eows in the class' suffered in competition | owing to lack of .show condition. trie champion cow, which was a nice type ot the Scottish milking breed, was shown'by Mr Aitken, while Mr Dick, who was especially prominent in the section, was awarded the championship for the bulls.; In three only of the Shorthorn classes were there any entries, and in two ot these there was only one entry apiece, tliese being bulls, shown by Messrs A. Struthers and W. J- Lewis. ibe class for yearling heifers attracted four entries, Mr J. Hellyer being placed first Mr Struthers second, and Mr A. J. lngs third. The judge said all the animals were good Shorthorn types and worthy representatives of the breed, A good, serviceable lot were brought forward in the ring for crossbred cattle. The standard of quality was very even, and with fair entries th competition was keen. The awards were well distributed, and a notable feature waa that in no case did a breeder secure more than one first prize in the section. No fewer than 14 calves were entered in the special class: for a heifer calf' reared bV'a boy or girl on the Peninsula. The calves were splendidly grown and a real, credit to the young exhibitors. _ lust prize went to a particularly nice call shown by David Donaldson, and an indication of the merit of the class can be gained from the fact that four other awards were made. . ~ Good entries were received among the draught horses. The standard which was attained here was a credit to the district. The class regarding which the judge was most complimentary was that for dry mares, in which Mr M. Geary took the red ticket, Mr W. Cowan being awarded second and third prizes. I he yearling colt shown by Mr J. Landret.i, which was placed first in that class, was an outstanding animal, and showed promise of developing into a very fine type of Clydesdale. The working horses were a good lot, and were brought forward m splendid show condition, a fact which reflected great credit upon the exhibitors of the district. ... : , The judge of the light horses criticised several of the light horse classes, in which he stated that the quality of the entries was very mixed. Mrs T. Dalziel s Chrysler added another to his long list of successes by securing the championship among the hackneys, and the same horse was also awarded the red tickets for the cavalry horse and for the 14-stone hacks. The prize money waa fairly well distributed throughout the section, in which a number of Dunedin owners were fairly prominent. The judge was greatly impressed bv Master K. Russell s pony, . which won first prize in the class tor * ponies, 12J hands or under, and which, - in his opinion, would be very hard to bo flie fact that the main industry of the Otago Peninsula is dairying was demonstrated in the sheep section, in which only two classes were filled. In each ot those, unfortunately, there was only one entry, and consequently there was little interest in the section. The judge remarked that the quality was good, but commented that it was a pity that more attention was not paid to the class tor of the vegetable section stated that he expected to see larger entries in a season so favourable for the growing or all garden produce. However, what was lacking in quantity was made up for by the quality of the entries, and the winning exhibits were specially good. 1 he judge had the criticism to make ot the exhibits in the classes for potatoes that they were too large for show purposes. Good entries were a feature of the baking section, in which the exhibits were of a high standard, the class for light, fruit cakes being outstanding. The judge of the dairy produce said that although the number of entries was small, the quality of the butter was very j f rood, and the standard was easily up to i that of the larger shows in the province. ! In this section Mrs -I. Hellyer had the enviable distinction of taking first prize in every class. PRIZE LIST The following is the prize list:— DRAUGHT HORSES. Judge: Mr James Dow (Lee Creek).
