Mr C. A. Hamer left by the through express yesterday for the north on a visit to Sydney. Dr Gordon N. Findlay left by the through express yesterday for the north to take up the position of house surgeon at the Wanganui Hospital. Mr Arthur Pratt left by the through express yesterday for the north on a visit to Sydney. Senior and junior teams from the Otago Boys’ Cricket Association left by the through express yesterday to play matches at Christchurch. The senior teams will play for the Biltcliff Cup and the juniors for the Rix Cup. Messrs J. H. A. M'Phee and H. Greenfield are the managers of the local teams. Mr W. H. Shepherd, managing director of the Bell Tea Company, Ltd., who has been visiting India, Ceylon, and other parts of the East studying the latest methods in the production of tea, has returned to Dunedin.

Mr H. W. Milner, of Napier, has been appointed Dominion secretary to the Sudan United Mission, in succession to Mr J. Priestley, whose death occurred last August. Senior-sergeant W. E. Packer has assumed charge of the Invercargill Police District pending the appointment of a successor to Inspector P. J. M'Carthy. The Right Reverend W. H. Baddeley, D. 5.0.. M.C., 'Bishop of Melanesia, arrived from the north yesterday afternoon. He will leave by the express this morning for Invercargill, where he will deliver an address, and will return to Dunedin to-morrow morning to fulfil preaching engagements on Sunday. To-morrow afternoon a garden party will be held at “ Lis Escop,” when parishioners throughout the city and suburbs will have an opportunity of meeting Bishop Baddeley. During Bishop Baddeley’s stay in Dunedin he will be the guest of Bishop Richards.

Fifty years’ service on the lecturing staff of the Auckland University College will be completed by Mr A. 11. Bowell, lecturer in chemistry, next June. Reference to Mr Bowell’s services to the college was made at the meeting of the college council on Monday when his resignation was received. The president, Sir George Fowlds, said that although Mr Bowell was due to retire this year, an exception would be made in his case to enable him to complete 50 years’ service. He therefore moved that the resignation be accepted, to take effect next June, but that leave of absence be granted in the meantime, so that it would not joe necessary for him to continue his duties. The motion was carried. It was also resolved to send Mr Bowell a letter expressing the council’s cordial appreciation of his lengthy services. According to a Press Association telegram from Wellington the election of Mr K. J. Holyoake as member for Motueka was gazetted last night. Mr D. A. Palmer, who has been transferred from the Invercargill branch of the Post Office Money Order and Savings IBank to headquarters, Wellington, arrived in Dunedin yesterday, prior to departing to Wellington to take up his new duties. Mr Palmer was accorded a farewell on Wednesday afternoon by fellowmembers of the Invercargill office and presented with a leather suit case and gold-mounted fountain pen as a token of the esteem in which he was held by the staff (states the Southland Times). In making the presentation, the chief postmaster (Mr 0. J. Wright) referred to the excellent qualities of Mr Palmer, both as an officer and a man, and wished him continued success. Mr Palmer suitably replied. Sir Berkeley Sheffield, of Nottingham, England, who is at present in Christchurch, will visit Otago and Southland during the next few days. Sir Berkeley, who is making a tour of the Dominion for fishing and sight-seeing purposes, will leave for England about January 24. Mr H. M. Mackay left by the White Star Air Service for Wellington at daylight yesterday morning on business in connection with Sir Kingsford Smith’s visit and other transport matters. He expects to return to Dunedin to-night. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the Gazette which was issued last night announces the appointment of Mr William Osborne Rennie as a member of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College. It is also announced that Messrs John Dryden Hall and Arthur Morton have been appointed members of the Massey Agricultural College Council. Mr F. W. Mothes, managing director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency. Ltd., is at present in Dunedin on a short business visit, and is staying at the Grand Hotel.
