BROADCASTING ORCHESTRA. CONDUCTOR APPOINTED. LONDON, December 14. Mr R. S. Wallace (Vice-Chancellor of Sydney University) has arranged for Mr Harold Sargent (conductor-in-chief of the Royal Choral Society ) to visit Australia during July and August to conduct' the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s national orchestra and carry out other studio work. He will visit all the States, with the object of building up an Australian national orchestra. Mr Wallace, on behalf of the Broadcasting Commission, has appointed a former Sydney city organist, Mr Arthur Mason, its London representative. RAILWAY COMMISSIONER. MR CLEARY’S RESIGNATION. SYDNEY, December 15. The Chief Railway Commissioner (Mr Cleary) has forwarded his resignation to the Premier. It is understood that his resignation was actuated by private reasons, nqt because of differences with the Ministry. STATE BUSINESS NEW SOUTH WALES LOSSES. A MEMBER APOLOGISES. THE BRISBANE INCIDENT. BRISBANE, December 15. In the Assembly Mr Maher appeared before the bar of the House to answer a charge of having assaulted Mr Llewelyn. The Speaker read a letter from Mr Maher in which he tendered a full apology to the House and ”to Mr Llewelyn. The- latter said he would accept some of the blame and offered an apology for using certain words. The matter was then allowed to drop. While in committee, Mr E. Llewelyn (Labour) said that Mr E. Maher (Country Party) had a filthy mind. Mr Maher walked across the Chamber and struck Mr Llewelyn in the face, Mr Maher was suspended for the remainder of the session. Later the Premier moved that Mr Maher be summoned to attendant the bar of the House to answer a charge of having assaulted Mr Llewelyn. This was agreed to.
