(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON, December 15. LAWN TENNIS, The following will represent Toko Club’s No. 1 team in the postponed match against Kaitangata No. 1 team, to be played at Milton on Saturday afternoon: —Sumpter, Moore, Woodhead, Webster, Misses Brookes, Coombe, Clery, and S. Vidal. Toko Club’s C team will journey to Lovell’s Flat on Saturday afternoon for a friendly match, and will be represented by Marryatt. Hunt, Ransome, Fagg, Misses Hunt, Stewart, Page, and A. Gray. CRICKET. The cricket shield matches, postponed last Saturday owing to wet weather, will he played on Saturday afternoon. In the northern division Milton A will play Milburn on the latter’s ground; Milton B will receive a visit from a Waihola team. The teams are as follow:—-Milton A: R. M'Gregor (captain), M. Devanney. The following team will represent Milton Club in the postponed friendly match against Lawrence Club on the local green on Saturday afternoon: —Clery, Smith, M'Callum, Devanney; Clark, Moroney, Lillicrapp, Marshall; Currie, Hitchon, Ransome, Withey; Grealish, Groundwater, Farrell, Cuff. PERSONAL. Sister Pullar, who has been in charge of Milton Hospital for the past two years and four months, will leave to-morrow morning to take up her new appointment as matron of the Cromwell Hospital. Sister Pullar will be succeeded locally by Sister M'Miilan, from the Balclutha base hospital, as sister-in-charge. RETIREMENT OF GENERAL A. E. STEWART.

A recent Gazette notice announced the posting to the retired list of Brigadiergeneral A. E. Stewart (Milton), C.M.G., D. 5.0., an officer who has a highly commendable and lengthy period of military service to his credit. He first commenced military service 47 years ago as a private in the Bruce Rifle Volunteers, joining the corps in May, 1885. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1893, and three years later succeeded the late Captain Donald Reid in command of the Bruce Rifles. In 1904 the general (then captain) was promoted to the rank of major, and appointed to the command of the 4th Battalion of the Otago Rifles, gaining his lieutenantcolonelcy in 1906. After the outbreak of the Great War General Stewart was called from the reserve of officers in October, 1914, and was appointed to the command of the 14th (South Otago) Territorial Regiment. General Stewart joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on May 21, 1915, and after a period in camp left New Zealand on active service on November 9, 1915. He served in Egypt and France in command of the 2nd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. When General H. Fulton, who trained and commanded the Brigade, was killed in March, 1918, General Stewart was appointed .to the command. He was wounded in July, and after convalescence was appointed to command the 4th New Zealand Infantry Brigade at Sling Camp,' Wiltshire, England, which he held until April, 1919, during which period the bulk of the repatriation of the New eZaland troops was carried OUt. . , General Stewart, on returning to New Zealand, was appointed to command the Otago Infantry Brigade, and in 1921 to command the 3rd New Zealand Infantry Brigade, which position he relinquished in May, 1925. General Stewart holds the 12 and 18 years’ service medals, also the Colonial Auxiliary Forces officers’ decoration for 20 years’ commissioned service. On active service General Stewart was awarded the OM.G., the D. 5.0., the Croix de Guerre: (French), 1914-15 Star. British Wan Medal, and the Victory Medal.
