Mr C. E. Barnes, railway commercial agent, travelled by the north express yesterday morning on his way to Wellington. It is expected that it will be at least a week before the Mayor (Mr R, S. Black) is able to resume his official duties. Mr D. Maider will leave for Wellington by the express this morning. Mr L. G. Cheriton, manager of the Milford track, has returned from a holiday and business visit to Wellington. He will leave to-morrow morning for Queenstown, where he will stay a few days before returning to Te Anau. Dr A. C. Aitken, a distinguished graduate of the University of Otago, is the joint author with Professor Turnbull, of, the University of St. Andrews, of a book on Canonical Matrices, a modern and advanced branch of algebraical analysis, copies of which have reached New Zealand. Dr Aitken is at present a lecturer, in mathematics at Edinburgh University. , : 1 In connection with the eightieth birthday celebrations,, of the Charles Dallastoh a few days ago. it is interesting to note that, on June 23, the Rev. T. Harrington, of Invercargill, celebrated asimilar anniversary. Both studied at Home, and both were under the Tate Rev. C. H. Spurgeon at Pastor’s College. Messrs Dallaston and Harrington have had a long and varied experience of clerical life, and they are among the oldest ‘ ministers in New Zealand. Mr Eric M. Rule, youngest son of the Rev. Frank Rule, of Christchurch, who left three years ago to take his Divinity course in the Louisville Presbyterian Theological. Seminary, where his. brother is professor of apologetics, has recently graduated and won the Seminary s Scholarship in history. This entitles him to two years at a foreign university, and he proposes to go to Edinburgh for his post-graduate work. Mr A. Gibbs, who recently retired from the position of chief telegraph engineer, was presented with, a copy of the History of New Zealand,” autographed by every one of his colleagues in the engineering branch throughout New Zealand, at the annual socaal evening of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Engineers Institute. Members paid tribute to the work performed,by Mr Gibbs over a long period of years. ’ . ;
