RELIEF WORKS '' .. ... i '. .... i • Fifty-four men were employed on relief work in the borough yesterday. A large number is, still located in William street and Quarry - road, where improvements are being made. Six men were sent to Mussel Bay, where they are engaged in excavating a trench to connect with the proposed drainage works. It will be necessary to complete the drainage scheme before the reclamation .work j at Mussel Bay is started. : ’ LADIES’ GOLF , The Ladies’ section of the Port .Chalmers Golf Club played the qualifying round of the championship on' the Sawyers’ Bay links on Saturday afternoon. The weather was not favourable, and the course and greens were, heavy.,, .'The results were as follow: —Miss M. Duncan beat Miss W. Dodds, 1 Mrs Fletcher beat Miss B. Jackson, Mrs M'Donald beat Miss G. Parry, and M. Morgan beat Mrs Edgar. The semi-finals and final of the championship have yet to be played. ' A ladies’ flag match was also played, and resulted in a win for Miss J. Innes.. The semi-finals of the Men’s Championship will be played next Saturday afternoon. : -'v .J' '' , :.i;i '■ ' T : MOTOR' IN DOCK V The distinction r. pf . being , one of i the best-equipped bopts of her'size so far as accommodation is concerned and, the most economically operated is credited to the intercolonial motor ship Port Waikato; which was docked yesterday morning at, Port Chalmers for cleaning and painting. The ship’s Diesel motors are capable; ot doing a month’s work on 80 tons of. fuel, and the machinery being automatically oiled, greasers are not . required. A donkeyman is the only assistant required by the three engineers. The machinery is also reliable, the vessel never having had to stop at sea since she was built; She trades between Dargaville, • Wpaj. ngaroi, Auckland, and southern ports; with occasional trips to Australia. The vessel’s seagoing qualities are as notable as are her fine suite of apartments amidships—for a craft of her size. Uaptaifi Watchlin, who had the Port Waikato built to order about three years ago, i# at present in Australia, having purr cha'stfd another, somewhat smaller, vessel, which he is having converted from.steam to motor propulsion, and re-christenwig the Port Whangarei. The Port Waikato is under the command of Captain r JVI« r Holm, formerly of the coastal steamer Holmdale. ■ - . ‘ PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE ' ; The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Progressive League was. held last evening in the Municipal buildings. The president (Mr L. Culbert) was chairman. There was a fair attendance of members.. . It was suggested that something might be done in connection with a ; nuisance caused bv the pine needles on the graves at the cemetery. The, pine trees were too close' to the graves and . gave those who owned ground in the vicinity - conr giderable trouble in keeping their sections in order. . , ’ , The’ president and secretary were appointed delegates to attend the annual meeting of the Otago Expansion League on July 19: It was decided to commune cate with the Borough Council with the object of having the telephone toll caUs, both private and business, reduced to dd, the same as the slot telephone charges. The chairman said it was pleasing to know a start had been made with altering the drainage at Mussel Bay, and that the pipes were on the site ready to be connected, up for pumping in the spoil.
