RECREATION GROUNDS
to the editor. Sir, —At the meeting of the City Council on Wednesday night it was decided to spend a large sum of money in improving the recently acquired recreation ground, the Stadium. Councillor Shacklock is to he congratulated on trying to get similar treatment for the Oval. I cannot understand the action of the majority of the Councillors in this matter. The Oval is the finest recreation ground in New Zealand and the, most neglected; for some reason. Mr .Tannock seems to have a prejudice against it. Three years ago half the surface of the ground wag raised, and the result is the state of the ground „was made worse than ever. I am surprised at the attitude of Councillor Clark, who is supposed to be a keen supporter of cricket, not insisting that the ground should be pbt in first-class order at once, as the Oval is more used by boys playing cricket than any other ground. The Oval is the most popular .of all our recreation grounds, and the City Council should spend the money where it will do the most good for the greatest number. If this ground was in any other city the authorities would take a pride in it, and I trust the City Council will soon remedy the disgraceful conditions existingat it. —I am, etc., A. P. Dunedin, July 8.
