4 Press Association cablegram from London states that Messrs Jarrolds have published Miss Nellie Scanlan’s third novel, “ Pencarrow,” dealing with the fortunes' of three generations of a New Zealand family, from the early pioneering days to the present century. Mr E. J. Gravestock, the well-known impresario, has been appointed manager of the St. James Theatre, Sydney. Mr C. E. Wheeler, who has been a member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery for the past 26 years, and who is about to leave with Mrs Wheeler on a trip to the Old Country, was accorded a farewell by his Gallery colleagues at supper in Bellamy’s on Tuesday. The chairman of the Gallery (Mr 6. breeman) briefly wished Mr and Mrs Wheeler bon voyage, and Mr Wheeler suitably repiieid. l)r Clifford James, of New Zealand, who has been appointed to take chill ge of the Stewart Hospital, New Britain, on behalf of the Methodist Foreign Missions, will visit Melbourne next month. Dr James is a student of tropical diseases who, in addition to having done postgraduate work in London, has spent three years in the Solomon Islands as a medical missionary. He will succeed Dr Kay Penington in the work in New Britain. Dr Penington has returned to Melbourne, where he is practising his profession. According to advice from Auckland, tne post-graduate travelling scholarship in law awarded by the University of New Zealand every second year has been won oy Mr R. J. O’Dea, an old boy of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, who is now in practice in Haweva. Mr 0 Dea, who was last year a student of the law school at the Auckland University College, is as yet uncertain whether he will avail himself of the scholarship. Under the terms of the scholarship Mr O’Dea is entitled to two years at an English university with £250 a year and travelling expenses.
