YOUNG WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF DIRECTORS - , The monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Y.W.C.A.’ was held on Wednesday. Mrs E. E._ Nicolson conducted the opening devotions, and presided over a meeting* which was attended by the following members:—Mesdames J. C. Begg, Hi M'Allum, D. Adamson, W. J. Portcous, G. M. Aikraan, R. N. Field, P. Kerens, R. Jack, 11. D. Skinner, Misses Gillies 'and Black, and the general secretary. All members stood in silence _ as an expression of their sympathy with the relatives of the late Miss Ada Perry. Correspondence-was received from the Returned Soldiers’ Association regarding the Anzac Day service—lt was decided that the Y.W.C.A. should be represented at this by the president and a group of girl citizens. It was also decided that the Y.W.C.A. should take the usual corner for street collection in the Poppy Day appeal, and plans were, made to staff that corner from 7 a.m. ’ A letter from the general secretary of the World’s Office of the Y.W.C.A. was read, urging the association to make a definite contribution in arousing public opinion concerning matters of international justice and peace. Reports and recommendations resulting from the visit of Miss fatevenson, national general secretary, \were read. The functions for girls included a banquet, “ Ship Ahoy,” a social evening, a business luncheon, meeting with students and old collegians, a gathering of all the Easter Bible Class campers—Baptist, Church of Christ, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Y.W.C.A. —in addition to meetings with the associations own club groups for advice and inspiration. Business men were met at morning tea, and again at a Rotary luncheon. A small group of clergy met Miss Stevenson at morning tea. Women’s meetings were held with the Women Teachers’ Association, and at various drawing room meetings, which were given in Miss Stevenson’s honour by Mrs J. S. Ross, Mrs Gordon-Bell, Mrs R. Jack, and Miss Black, and an At Home given by the board of directors. Miss Stevenson had addressed members of the Otago Women’s Club at a special luncheon. In addition to these functions, which were more or less of a social nature, there were many meetings for committees and .. groups within the association of a purely business nature. At the close of her visit Miss Stevenson led a service for workers and members on Sunday afternoon. Miss Stevenson’s recommendation to hold a finance campaign and to increase the women’s membership and interest were agreed to, and definite plans were made. Mrs R. N. Field was appointed to represent the Y.W.C.A. on the Society for the Protection of Women and Children for the ensuing year. A report of the last meeting of the National Council of Women was given, and departmental reports followed. The physical department report showed that physical culture classes were in full swing. The annual meeting of tiie basket ball and hockey clubs had been held, and the final tournament of the lawn tennis season played. The Swimming Club closed its season with a carnival. Four teams had been entered in the Otago Basket Ball Union, and received coaching each week. The cafeteria report showed an increase in the number who were availing themselves of the luncheon room.

The club reports showed that the winter programme was in full swing. A successful Easter camp had been held with the Girl Citizens, and also a church parade. Programmes had centred round the idea of world fellowship for the younger girls, and interest groups in dramatics, folk dancing, singing and handwork had been enjoyed by the older girls. A report of the Hibbert Club’s annual meeting proved interesting, and the plans for this year’s programme of the club promised an excellent winter syllabus. The Hostel numbers remained much the same as formerly.
