BALCLUTHA NOTES (From Ouu Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, January 15. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. At a meeting of the Balclutha Caledonian Society, presided over by the president (Mr L. Graham), it was decided to hold the annual sports in March. It was also agreed to hold an evening sports meeting early in February, for which an interesting programme is being draivn up. PERSONAL. Mr J. Sewell, who has been for the past 18 months in the Balclutha Post Office, has received notice of his transfer to the Clinton office. Mr Sewell will be missed locally, as he has taken a prominent part in South Otago representative matches. He is also a valued member of the Bowling Club, and an athlete of more than ordinary qualities. ' , . , Mrs D. P. Clements, who has been the matron of the Kaitangata Hospital since its inception, is retiring at the end ot F ebruary, Miss B. Templeton, of Dunedin, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the staff, and will commence her duties at the beginning of February. _ Mr W. Wohlmanu, commissioner ot police, viisted Balclutha, Kaitangata, Owaka, and other police centres during 11,0 W “ k - MINERS' PICNIC. At an enthusiastic meeting of the Kaitangata miners it was decided to hold the annual picnic at St. Clair on February 5, for which a special excursion train will be chartered. WELCOME RAINS. The splendid rains that have fallen during the past week have had a beneficial effect upon turnips, rape, and other summer crops. Shearing is, however, being hampered by the continuous wet weather. Mushrooms are plentiful in the sheep country. SALE OF LAND. A record is believed to have been established when a piece of land situated near Warepa in the Waitepeka district, containing 134 acres freehold, was sold by public auction at the Owaka sale yards today, for the remarkable price of £lO, or somewhere about Is Od per acre. Bidding started at £1 for the lot, and eventually when £lO was reached it was knocked down to the astonished bidder.
