TAPANUI NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TAPANUI, January 13. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Tapanui Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. S. Edgar) and Crs Quin, Brims, Wright, and Duff. CORRESPONDENCE. The Commissioner of Transport wrote requesting that a copy of all legal restrictions as regards both speed and weight, which the council considers should be taken into account by the transport licensing authorities, be forwarded to him at the earliest date. —The town clerk to forward a copy of the by-laws. The Under-secretary of the Lands and Survey Department wrote directing the council’s attention to the fact that the annual report and balance sheet of the Whisky Gully Domain Board had not been received.—Town clerk to attend to the matter. WORKS COMMITTEE. On behalf of Cr Varcoe, the Mayor read the following report of the Works Committee: —Since the last council meeting the work authorised by the council had been carried out, and at the request of the Mayor two men had been sent to the cemetery, where necessary work was done.. The committee met during the month, and submitted the_ following recommendations for the coming month: —Cleaning the channel, trimming the footpath on the top side, and cutting a drain on the lower side of Bedford street, taking the necessary materials and depositing same at the corner of Bedford and Forest streets; placing a line of pipes to carry the surplus water from Bedford street into the drain in Forest street; cleaning out the water channel in Forest street, and removing an uneven surface in the latter street. The committee also recommended that the mower be engaged to cut the long grass in many places. The drain passing through Mr D- Keir’s property had been attended to. The report Tvas adopted on the motion of Cr Wright, seconded by Cr Brims. GENERAL. On the motion of Cr Quin, it was decided to call for tenders for concreting approximately 10 chains of footpath in Northumberland street, from the Courthouse to York street. The town clerk reported that at present there was a credit balance in the bank of £239 15s lid, and with outstanding rents, rates, and sundry accounts the total amount would be probably £3Ol 3s Bd, Estimating the ordinary expenditure for the remainder of the year at £250, a balance of approximately £IOO would be available for permanent improvements in the borough. Accounts amounting to £ll2 11s 8d were passed for payment.
