CHURCH AND WEDLOCK
REVISION OF PRACTICES j LONDON, January 6. A movement for the tightening up o£ the practices of the Church of England with regard to marriages has been initiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Dr Cosmo Lang states that owing to tfye increasing public laxity, vicars should be careful in accepting notices for banns. He has authorised the diocesan of a list of questions submissiblo to* parties requesting the banns, which includes notification. He does not desire* the church solemnisation of the marriage of a divorced person whose husband oarwife is still alive, nor of a person purposing to marry within the Prayer Book’s prohibited degrees of kindred, nor of any unbaptised persons. Civil marriage is, the Archbishop says, available for such cases. The clergy majf seek advice from the Archbishop. When one of the parties has been baj*tised, the clergy must clearly explain to the matrimonial candidates the ideals, and obligations of Christian matrimony.
