NOTES ON THE PLAY (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 13. The play generally in section A was of a modest standard, the only noteworthy incident being the fighting finish staged by Nicholls in his game against Piper (Matai). On the sixteenth head the scores were 16—9 in favour of the Nelson pair, but Bales and Nicholls put on a 6,4, 3, and lin succession, Piper getting two on the last head. A feature in .section Al was the splendid game played by Rolls (Featberstou), who, despite the handicap occasioned by the loss of one leg, demonstrated his sound ability throughout and thoroughly merited his' three victories. At no stage of any game did the Dunedinites, Morrison and Gardiner, appear in difficulties, and a continuation of their form will find them disputing the final issue. They are a nicely-balanced pair, and if Deare has maintained his last year’s form he_ should go near to repeating his rink victory. ’ The Aucklanders, Bremner and Hardley, were hard put to it to stave off Hinchcliff and Seddon. The game was full of interest from the first howl to the last, with the Auckland men first shading their opponents. Gregory _ and Deare (Dunedin), who were associated in last season’s champion rink, proved too good for the opposition in section E, and it would occasion little surprise if they met their rink-fellows, Morrison and Gardner, fn the final for the pairs. . , , After his brilliant form in the Singles it was reasonable to look to Routley to hold at bay hia_ opponents on the Cashmere green, particularly when he had such a fine partner as Gray. He wan perhaps a trifle unfortunate not to record three wins, Howarth touching him off in the last head. Chief interest in section K centred in the winning effort of the two Dicksons, father and son, the latter acting as skip. Wellings and M‘Whannell, a solid Haaitai pair, and Lewis and Reese (United) came through section Ml unscathed, M‘Whannell impressing most. The game between J. Doolan and W. Anderson (Dunedin) and E. B. Elliott and D. Martin (Frankton) was very exciting. On the twentieth head Doolan lay 3, Anderson improving the position to 6, but Martin played a perfect draw to lie second shot. Anderson wanted 3 to win on the last head, and after some excellent drawing managed to survive by a single. One of the finest games of the day was that between Sewell and West (Edgeware) and M‘Millan and Jack (Wanganui). All of them were drawing very accurately, and on one occasion 10 bowls lay within 18 inches of the kitty.
