AVIATION

AN AUCKLAND INVENTION AEROPLANE STABILISER. LONDON, January 12. The Air Ministry, Handley Page, and other aircraft firms have decided to experiment with an aeroplane stabiliser, the invention of Mr B. Roberts, of Auckland. Many pilots using various types of machines tried out the invention at Heston, and speak highly of the effectiveness of the device under severe conditions. They claimed that the invention immediately stopped a deliberate spin, and enabled pilots to retain the course perfectly when flying blind in fog. The device is stated to be successful even on machines not fitted with the slotted wing. WORLD’S LARGEST FLYING BOAT. TO BE BUILT IN BRITAIN. LONDON, January 13. (Received Jan. 13, at 10.30 p.m.) The largest flying boat in the world is being built at Vickers factory to the order of the Air Ministry. It is a sixengined wonder, and eclipses Germany’s pride, the Do.X. The Vickers boat resembles a monster fish with a tail high up in the air, tapering to an enormous belly and ending in a huge blunt nose, which is also in the air. Only the belly will be in the water, enabling the liner to ride the heaviest waves. The engines will be out of reach of even mountainous seas. The equipment includes restaurants, baths, and sleeping berths.
