IN A CRATER LAKE

A VENTURESOME SWIMMER WOMAN’S AMBITION SATISFIED. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, January 13. An ambition to swim in the crater lake of Mount Ruapehu was realised on Saturday by Miss Mi Shorter, of Wellington, who is believed to be the first woman to bathe in the lake. With two others, Mr John Greer, of Auckland, and Guide Olaf Pedersen, from the Chateau, she had a swim for about a quarter of an hour in the tepid water. A party of seven visitors who had not made the ascent of Ruapehu before, accompanied by a guide, left The Chateau at 6.15 a.m., three members of the party carrying bathing suits and towels, with the express intention of having a swim in the lake. Perfect weather favoured them from the start, and the ascent to the crater lake, was made in a little under seven hours. While the three bathers were occupied with the steep descent of 400 feet to the level of the, lake the remainder of the party watched them from above. The bathers stated that the water was fairly cold and had a sulphur taste. One of them tried the depth of the lake not far out from the edge, but it was too deep to touch bottom.
