A curious disease, which he called “ pre-; served meat sickness,” was the subject of a talk to the French Academy of Medicine by Dr Charcet, the noted Polar explorer His experiences on Polar voyages, he said, have convinced him that there exists in preserved meat some unknown element capable of causing a complaint which is often mistaken for scurvy or beri-beri. In 1908, while in the Antarctic, he and one of the ship’s officers suffered from red spots on different parts of the body, extreme tiredness, and heart trouble. When they stopped eating preserved meat all the symptoms disappeared in four days. He emphasised that there was no danger of illness if only moderate quantities of preserved food were oaten. —lmperial Airways are lo establish an airport at Tiberias, on the Sea of Galilee.
