CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

FIFTH ROUND (Pee United Press Association.) NAPIER, December 30. The Dominion Chess Championship was continued to-day. The following are the results of the fifth round:— R. 0. Scott (Wanganui) lost to A. W. Gyles (Wellington). Queen’s gambit declined. Gyles, attacking early, gained a rook and two pawns, finishing with a pretty mate. C. J. S. Purdy (New South Wales) beat E. S. Rutherford (Taranaki). Purdy’s game was probably his best to date during the congress. Although he had no advantage in material his position was overwhelming for some time prior to his opponent’s resignation. W. J. Fairburn (Wellington) lost to G. Gunderson (Melbourne), Queen’s pawn game. Gundersen won the pawn and the_ exchange, and had a commanding position. After sundry exchanges he brought off an evidently unexpected mate. J. A. Erskine (Southland) beat F. K. Keiling (Wellington). Zukertoort opening. Keiling castled on the queen’s side, and instituted an attack. Erskine, however, won the exchange on his twentieth move, and speedily forced the win. E. L. Smith (Napier) drew with E. H. Severne (Nelson). Max Lange. White was still a pawn down when the end of the game arrived, but was able to draw. H. N. Maddox (Auckland) beat K. O’Halloran (Napier). Irregular opening. Maddox picked up four pawns at intervals, and then forced the exchanges of all the pieces. J. C. Grierson (Auckland) beat the Rev. A. Miller (Westport). Grierson appeared to change a possible loss to a certain draw, and then a win. The unfinished game between Grierson and Keiling in the first round resulted in a draw after 94 moves. The following are the scores after the fifth round:—

Won. Drawn. Lost, Total. Giles .. 5 0 0 5 Purdy .. 4 0 1 4 Gundersen 4 0 1 4 Erskine.. 4 0 I 4 Kelling 2 2 1 3 Maddox.. 3 0 1 3 Severue.. 2 2 1 3 Kutherfurd 2 1 2 21 Miller .. 1 1 3 li Scott .. I 1 3 u Grierson 1 1 3 n Fairburn 1 0 4 i O’Halloran 0 1 4 * Smith .. 0 1 4 1
