PRESBYTERIAN BIBLE CLASSES

SUMMER CONFERENCE (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, December 29. The annual Presbyterian Bible Class Summer Conference, which began at Invercargill on Saturday, shows promise of being as highly successful as those held in the past. There are 013 registrations to date, delegates being present from all parts of New Zealand — from North Auckland to Bluff. The central theme round which all conference study and meditation are planned to revolve is the challenging ideal of “ The World for Christ,” the title of the study book prepared by the Rev. H. Davies, the young men’s Bible class missionary representative in Canton. The daily programme is a full one, the morning being devoted to study circles and sectional meetings for Bible class members and Sunday school teachers, and the afternoons being taken up with sport and recreation, including on different days laivn tennis, cricket, swimming, basket ball, and athletics. On Sunday the conference began in real earnest. In the afternoon Dr J. D. Salmond, director of youth work, wdio recently returned from extensive travel abroad, delivered an address entitled “ Survey of the Modern World.” He dealt with the great forces which are at work in the w'orld to-day —intense nationalism influencing both the West and the East, Communism particularly in its results in Russia, and Christianity, which, he said, was the only real force capable of affording a solution of the world’s problems and needs. On Monday an all-day picnic w'as held at Bluff. In the evening the Rev. D. C. Herron took as his subject “ The Implications of the Christian Gospel for our own Country.” This evening he spoke on “The Implications of the Christian Gospel for the Regions Beyond.”

The conference will be continued for the rest of the week, and delegates will leave for their homes on Monday next.
