DESTITUTE WIFE

NEW ZEALAND CASE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, November 18. The plight of a destitute wife in New Zealand was brought to the notice of the Newcastle magistrate on November 11, when the clerk (Mr John Nicholson) put forward an application for the confirmation of a provisional order made in that country under the Married Women Act. Defendant was William R. Reid, of Deneholm, Midhurst road, Benton, who was formerly a ship’s officer. Mr S. Parkin (Messrs Keenleyside and Forster) applied for thc\case to he adjourned for two months because of the difficulty of conducting negotiations in New Zealand and England at the same time. Mr Nicholson road to the magistrates the evidence given by the Wife on oath in New Zealand. Mrs Reid stated that her husband interested himself in the formation of a company to exploit colour films, and he went to England to develop the colour films on the home market. Owing to unhappy differences they separated. She had received no money direct from her husband since he left for England. The bench decided to adjourn the case, and stipulated that the defendant must ho present.
