THE CHURCH AND THE DEPRESSION

to the Editor. Sir, —It is a great pity Dr Herrington did not see fit to answer Mr .Warrington Taylorte letter in your, issue of July 27. Dr Herrington's letter in your issue of Saturday only proves Mr Taylor’s contention that the Church fights the effects only, instead of getting down to the root cause of these recurring depressions. I am well aware of the principles involved, so far as art unions are concerned, but will one more such as the Mayor seeks permission to hold, weaken 'men’s moral fibre any more than the sight of half-starved, sparely-clothed women and children will do? If there has been any weakening of morals lately, will Dr Herrington state which is the cause—the recent series of art unions, or the present depression. May I be permitted to suggest that the Public Questions Committee of the Presbyterian Assembly should concentrate its energy and education on the cause of the depression, and give us what it thinks ■would be a remedy. No doubt it knows that most of the moral issues are involved—not excluding war. I may also add that to object to the Mayor’s proposed art union for the relief of distress says very, little for the deliberations of 'the Public Questions Committee, more especially when one knows the amount of money the Presbyterian Church sends oufc of the country for the relief of the heathen in foreign countries. —I am, etc., Dunedin, August 9. W. F.
