HARRIERS

ST. PATRICK’S. About 25 runners attended St. Patrick’s weekly run from the Mornington Catholic School. Paper was dispensed with, and the pack, under Captain M'Donnell, fob lowed the road leading towards Lookout Point, then branched downhill to the Kaikorai Valley road. The probable team for the Otago Cross-country, with Deputycaptain Airey in charge, followed the road as far as Green Island, and, in a practically non-stop run back to the school, Lemon, Hogan, and A. Byrne showed good form. The slow pack encountered good harrier country in the vicinity of the Southern Reservoir, the runners following the race a good distance on the return journey, ABBOTSFORD METHODIST.

The Abbotsford Methodist Harriers ran from the Abbotsford Church. A small muster under Captains Fineham and Sell, followed an excellent trail for which L. Hill and M. Watson were responsible. The trail, which began from the church, led through Abbotsford to the Fernhill railway line, and across the hills to the water-race, where it branchel off crossing the foot of Mount Grand, down across the Kaikorai road to the Industrial Home, and down the short cut and home via the Main road. A fairly long run home resulted in D. Fraser coming in first with R. Knox and C. Gare next in that order. CARGILL ROAD METHODIST.

The Cargill Road Methodist harriers held their Five-mile Club Championship and Sealed Handicap from the Scout Hall, St. Kilda. Mr A. T. MTndoe fulfilled the duties of starter, sending the pack away in good style from the St. Kilda Battery entrance. Twelve runners faced the starter, and all finished. The course lay along Victoria road to the St. Clair tennis courts, down Lover’s .lane to Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, then along Tahuna road and Victoria road, finishing at the St. Kilda end of Lover’s lane. At the end of the first mile the following was the order of the field:—MTndoe, Rockliff, and Bennie together, Chivers,. Harman, and Gray ip a group, and the rest bunched. By the time the Anderson's Bay Cemetery was reached the order was unchanged. Near the finish MTndoe, Rockliff, and Bennie were still leading, but more spaced out, while Clark had run into fourth place. The race finished;— MTndoe 1, Rockliff 2, Bennie 3. Time, 31 minutes. The Sealed Handicap resulted as follows: Barclay (4min lOsec) 1, Clark (4min lOsec) 2,, Wilson (4min 30see) 3. Harman, who was fourth man home, won the novice prize. ST. KILDA.

The St. Kilda Harrier Chib held its weekly run from the George Street School. A large muster of members was controlled by the club captain, Y. Duell. The laying of the trail was in the hands of C. Bissland and W. Churchill, and it led from the school up the Leith Valley to about 200 yards on the town side of the Paper Mills, where it turned across country up to the top of Pin e Hill. From here it went along to the top of the hill, across towards North-East Valley, round the top of Calder’s Quarry, and then down into the Valley about the North-East Valley .School. The scarcity of paper made running difficult, but, nevertheless, a fairly satisfactory run was held. In the run home A. Brown was first, followed by A; Thompson and G. Aitken. UNIVERSITY. University ran from Knois College. The trail led down past the Gardens and up Pine Hill to the foot of Flagstaff, From there the road was followed to Bethune’s Gully, and then up the hill to the Brown House, continuing round to the top of Signal Hill. In a long, fast run in downhill Stewart, Harris, and Mathewson finished in that order. The teams to represent University in the Cross-country Championhips next, Saturday will-he as follow:' —A team: Stewart, Maekie, A. Ross, R. Cabot, Jansen, Scott. B team: Watt,. Harris, King. Bibby, Mathewson. Hay. Emergencies—Arthur and J. Ross. DUNEDIN. The Dunedin Harrier Club held its Five-mile Championship and Sealed Handicap at Wingatui. A field of seven runners faced the starter, Mr R. Thompson. From the start D. Lorimer and J. Fitzgerald headed the field, and the order remained unchanged until the hill leading up to the plough was reached, where P. Holland displaced Fitzgerald. Down Janefield road and round to the starting post Holland and Lorimer ran together. The order remained the same the second time round, the only difference being that Lorimer gradually drew away from Holland to win by about 200 yaVds. There was a similar distance between Holland and Fitzgerald, the third man home. Result of Sealed Handicap;—A. Stanley 1, V. Sturgeon 2. Time, 35inin 37sec. The following will represent the club next Saturday:—D. W. Lorimer, P. Holland, J. Fitzgerald, P. Stanley, T. Baxter, and A. Stanley. LEITH. The Leith Club ran from Holy Innocents’ Schoolroom, Leith Valley. S. Nisbet and Syd. Peterson were responsible for the beet trail of the year, which led down Leith road to the old sawmill. Climbing up the hill to Ross Creek Reservoir the trail was followed over the new water channel and through the reserves’ plantation to the Balmaeewen golf links. Skirting the lifika and going down the bullock track a steep climb resulted to the top of Dalmore. Passing down the hill through Ford’s farm rough ploughed paddocks were coveted and the hall was finally reached. MORNINGTON BAPTIST. The run from the Mornington Baptist Church always offers pleasant road and cross-country running and it is always looked forward to with interest. Thirty members, in following the paper trail prepared by H. Rishworth and George M. Meggett, made a good clip down the Mill road and along the Kaikorai Valley. The remainder of the run was spent in following the paper running through the gorsecovered hillsides. Little was seen of the fast pack, but it is believed that they followed the trail throughout, maintaining a good speed in due proportion to the hill climbing undertaken. CIVIL SERVICE.

Twenty-five members of the Civil Service Club faced the starter, Mr Hoy, in the Cross-country Race, and from a good start M'Kernan took the lead and was first over the sod wall. Going over the post and rails Barnes, MlLachlan, and Brown were leading from M'Knight, M'Kernan, and Geddes. Up the hill the first time Brown took the lead from Barnes and M'Knight, but Barnes regained it on the plough. From then on the lead alternated between Barnes and Brown, with M'Knight a yard or two behind. M'Lachlan and Geddes were running together about 100 yards behind the leaders. At the end of the first lap Barnes, M'Knight, and Brown were still leading from Geddes and M'Lachlan, followed by Garbutt and MKeitch, who had a great struggle for last place in the No. 1 team. Barnes went to the front along Janefield ' road the second round and gradually drew away to win comfortably from Brown and M'Knight. Result: Barnes (33rain 28sec) 1, Brown (33min 45sec) 2, M'Knight (33min 53sec) 3, M'Lachlan (34min 20seel 4, Geddes (34min 57see) f>. Garbutt (35min Ssec) 6. The sealed handicap was won by G. The course followed a track past the Roslyn Mills on to the Kaikorai Valley road, and after about a quarter of a mile turned up the hill towards Mount Grand. Here the going was very rough, about a mile of gorse being encountered. After crossing Brockville road and some ploughed land the pack descended through- the bush to Fraser’s Creek and returned to Scoular Hall via the Roslyn tramline. In the run home R. Tait was first closely followed by W. Pyott and F. Stanton. The following teams will represent the club in the Cross-country Championship at Wingatui on Saturday:—A. Finlayson, L. Logan, W.
