PENALTY ON RATES.

UNIQUE POSITION DISCLOSED. (Per United Press Association.) WAIROA, February 10. A unique position was disclosed at last nights meeting of the Wairoa Borough Council when the question of imposing the 10 per cent, penalty on rates came up for discussion. The section of the Act, which was read, showed that any councillor in arrears could not vote on a resolution granting him any financial benefit, and this would be the case if the councillors present voted for remission of the 10 per cent, penalty. This information came as a bombshell, for only one councillor present had paid his rates, although allowed until the end of February to do so. After a lengthy discussion, the meeting adjourned until Thursday to enable the council to communicate with the Minister of Internal Affairs seeking relief.
