CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALE.
A LARGE CATALOGUE. PRICES UNDER DECEMBER RATES. .• I (Per United Press , Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 26. The second Christchurch wool sale of the present season was held to-day; There was a full bench of buyers. The catalogue of 29,833 bales comprised 4833 bales more than the original allocation, and it constituted the principal sale of the local series. The wool was moderately conditioned, much of it being tender grown on account of the erratic winter and spring. There was a proportion of super wools offered, somp exceptional Corriedale clips being included. The half-hour confirmed the expectation that the market would be lower than at the opening sale, but it was scarcely exr pected that the decline would be so much as actually proved to be the case. Medium halfbred was the most affected, this class declining on the rates of the first sale by IJd to I|d -a lb. Fine crossbred was down by about Id to IJd, and crossbred up to Id, whilst pieces, locks, -and crutchings made figures that were depressingly low. A few super lots of fleece wool made figures that appear satisfactory, meeting with special competition from the local mills, and are not a criterion of the, market. Average halfbred, which at last sale made round about 7d a lb, to-day sold at s|d, and it took something exceptional to reach 7J)d. The plain halfbred that sold about 4Jd comprised a fairly substantial part of the catalogue. The better Corriedale sold at about a penny drop on the preceding sale. Prices ranged at about 3Jd for the finer sorts, whilst locks and crutchings .were about a modest 2d. The competition was well spread, the Continent, principally France and Germany, being prominent for the plainer and scouring wools. The quantity bought on /Bradford account was disappointing, and there appeared to be little if any buying on American account. The strength of the . market was the competition of the local mills for good quality wools, and but, for their participation it is certain that vendors of good class wools would have had to be content with substantially less than what they secured,’- A few big clips were passed in, but that the market was met by vendors is illustrated by the fact that only about 11 per cent, of the total catalogue was passed at auction. The following is the range of prices:— Merino—64 to 701 b, 60 to 641 b Extra super, to 103 d. Super, 6jd to Bd. Average, 5d to 63d, Inferior, 3|d to 4|d. . Corriedale — Extra super, to lid.
