TRADING STAMPS.
PROSECUTION IN . AUCKLAND. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 22. A case of considerable interest to traders and the public was heard by the magistrate (Mr W. H. Woodward), when 10 charges of using trading stamps, and one of redeeming trading stamps, were brought against Universal Distributors, Ltd, on private information laid by the New Zealand Master Grocers’ Federation. Counsel for the federation said the company sold its certificates to some retailers in one locality to the exclusion of other retailers. Afraid of losing custom, many retailers purchased coupons at £2 10s per 1000 points, for _ issue to customers. One coupon, which meant one point, was handed to customers who purchased 2s worth or over, while a fivepoint coupon was handed to a customer who paid his accounts weekly. Counsel for defendant admitted the facts. He said the scheme was really a system of advertising, and helped retailers to obtain cash payments. He alleged that the prosecutions had been instigated by retailers discontented because unable to participate in the scheme. He submitted that no offence had been committed. Decision was reserved.
