The blue stone of Hartiley, Northumberland —the loeal equivalent of the famous blarney stone—disappeared in a night. Shortly , after the stone was missed, nearly every resident visited the spot where it had lain in the centre of the village. According to tradition, the stone was laid there by the hand of a giant, but the general belief is that it was carried from the foot cliffs.,,. It was believed that when the stone disappeared the prosperity of the village would cease. On one occasion, the stone was dropped into a dis, used quarry, but the villagers hauled it out, and restored it to its place.
