STATE AFFORESTATION OPERATIONS.

\ TO THE EDITOR. Sir— ln your issue of the 26th you published an account of afforestation operations in Now Zealand, which makes good reading indeed, except for poor little old Otago. Areas planted were: Auckland 9574 acres, Rotorua-29,194 acres, Wellington 2506 acres, Nelson 4101 acres, Canterbury 1 5091 acres, and Southland 2726 acres:- Otago is not mentioned. How is this when we have so much cheap land very suitable for forestry. . It is said that the department is planting land valued at _ £lO, £ls, and £2O ■ per .acre. Why is this when so much land is available _at £2, £3, and £4 per acre in our province? Wake up, Otago, and get things going!—l am, etc., Baokblockee. Pembroke, December 27.
