TEN-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED OWNER’S HEAVY LOSS.

(Per United Press Association’,) BLENHEIM, December 29. rl L ye6tei ’ d ,?? poking the homestead of Mr ihomas Walker, of Grassmere, was totally destroyed by fire, together with contents. The house comprised 10 rooms, and was formerly a well-known accommodation house. The oriaiu of the outbreak is a mystery. Mr Walker was in the house alone, having just returned from Haunter, leaving his wife and son there. He was awakened at about 2 in the morning to discover the house ablaze, and he escaped in his night attire. The flames made a clean sweep. Mr Walker is a heavy loer, many valuable possessions being lost? including a lump of ambergis wortu £75.

A LOCAL CALL. At 8.44 last evening the City Fire Brigade received ■ a call to Hope street, near Stafford street, where a fire had broken out in a two-storey brick building. The outbreak, which commenced in a cellar, was quickly brought under control, and. beyond the burning of a small hole in the wooden floor, no damage was done.
