THIEVES ENTER GROCERY SHOP. DISTURBED BY PROPRIETOR. (Special to- Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, , December 29. ■ A daring attempt to enter the grocery shop of N. Howie, Massey road, Mangere, was made at about 3.30 a.m. today. The intruders, who gained entrance to the building by forcing the wooden front door with a crowbar, were disturbed at their work, arid left without taking anything.Hearing the noise of splintering wood, Mr Howie, who resides in a house adjoining the shop, made investigations, and found .intruders ransacking the store. They immediately ran on to the road, where they boarded fwo waiting motor cars, one of which .was driven in the direction of Onelumga and . the other towards Otahuhu. Mr , Howie followed the men, and when he realised that he could not overtake them he threw a garden fork through the glass windscreen of the nearest car ini an effort to .prevent it being driven away. Although, broken glass, was scattered in all directions, the occupants of the,car did riot appear to be i injured. Owing to the darkness Mr Howie was unable to. ascertain how many, men broke into his premises, but ho is of the opinion that the attempted burglary was the work of a “ gang,” and that at least two men entered the shop.. He was also unable to distinguish the number of the plates ori the- vehicles. About £5 .worth of j tobacco which had been collected and made into a package by the intruders was found behind the counter.
