(Special to Daily Times.) * CHRISTCHURCH, December 29 Acceptances for the Canterbury Park meeting, which opens on Thursday, may be taken as highly satisfactory, , for, although the nominations Hid not constitute --a record, so few horses have declmed their engagements that the fields should ’be quite large enough to provide the best class of racing. iiJn Canterbury Handicap, ot lOOOsovs, 4.29 _ class, there are several notable defections, and these include Neeoro. who faded out. over the last part of the Ashburton Cup, Harvest Child, who raced particularly well, but was giving away a second to get into this race. Tree Advice, who is with W. J. Tomkins'®B team in Auckland, Cardinal Logan, i + Bundas Boy, whose_ two-mile form of late- has not been impressive. King .Pointer, whose stable mate, Great' Logan, is engaged, and Roi I’Or, who has been scene for some time. There is still a very good, field of 11 better than average performers engaged, and, though n- m u er ?- aas been penalised 12 yards on his handicap after giving away 12 yards to get into the race, he looks the most probable winner. In the hands of 0. King at Ashburton on Friday, he put up a fine performance and, driven by the same reinsman, he should again beat Great Logan, Vendome, and Erin’s For tune, who opposed him last week. Lindbergh does not always leave the mark smartly, and this may be a bigger disadvantage at Addington than it proved at. Ashburton, yet he Author Dillon geld’B a brilliant pacer and a good stayer °t niL lc « the best has not been seen. ihe Scottish trotter, Stanley T„ did not make the trip to Auckland, but on the first day at Canterbury Park he claims an engagement in the Stewards’ Handicap. 4.43 class, in' which he is set to do 4,39. This horse failed to run into a place off a similar mark at Forbury Park in a race won by White Satin, but B sssmea that the interference he met with the race had as much to do with his defeat as the ability of the horses he was opposed to. With anything like a good, beginning Stanley T. should make things very interesting for White Satin, who has never raced well at Addington. Two wins by Great Author at Westport have earned him a 24 yards penalty for the Lyttelton Handicap, to b e decided on the first day of . the Canterbury Park meeting, but he is one of the most promising pacers in commission, and he will have a big following on the day of the race. Before winning the double at West.port. Great Author was on 4.44 for two and as the Lyttelton Handicap is a y 4.40 class and he has been penalised two seconds, it means that he has paid a ■ six seconds’ penalty. Judiciously handled, however, he looks quite capable of winning from 4.38.

Haviland was fourth, followed by Lucky Alice, Loving Cup, and Catoma. _ It is a long time, since such a wellbalanced field welit to th e post for a weight-for-age raoei. at Eilerefie as that which contested the: King’s Plate, and the event created great interest. The race was run in the fast time of Imin 36 3-ssec, tK C m e<lu £ e , d Ihesjtuan’e race record anj the New Zealand record established when Ihespian sensationally defeated Gloaming m the race; in -19J50. which was then, known as the Islington Plate. Nightmarch and Hunting dry were considerably better backed than any of the others. However, calculations were upset when Karapoti, filth fancy in the field of six, bung on splendidly m the straight after setting a last pace, to* score convincingly from Hunting Cry and Toxeuma. BLacaS?*! “ a de the running along the back from Hunting Cry amd. Lady Pam, with the other three m a bunch. Passing the nan-mile Karapoti was; out two lengths Hnnfcng Cry, aind came into the straight a length clear* of Hunting Cry, with Lady Pam, Toxoiuma, and Nightmarch following, and 1. Cylinder, whom Gray was riding hard, lost. Once in line tor the poet Hunting Cry range* up on the outside of Karapoti, and momentarily looked like wimnng at the distance. Then Karapoti came on again,, and drew out to beat Hunting Cry by a .length and threequarters. Toxeuma warn naif a length away third, and Nightnutreh another two lengths away fourth, Cylinder and Lady Pam being well beaten. * Karapoti set a cracking pace from thei start—private watches made the first .hblf-mile 46 4-Ssec‘ and finished on brilliairtly in the circumstances. There is not the slightest doubt that up to a mile, at least, he is first-class. Nightmarch and Cylinder showed no dash at all. . ■ The Ponsonby Hurdles wan a chapter of accidents, only four of the 12 runntrs completing the course. The accidents made the way comparatively easy for the favourite, Claremore, although he did not have much in reserve whea he beat the rank outsider Absent at the finish. The mishaps commenced at, the first fence, •where Respirator fell. Them D..rk Prince lost his rider at the seconds while Glenstar and Star Comet both fell at the ir lr< L Mangani unseated his rider at the fourth fence, and Mafiter Lu did likewise at the fifth. Kamehameha baulked and lost his rider at the sixth fence, and St. Ames was pullcid up. Wako King was responsible for roost of the running from Claretnore and Absent and with four furlongs to go be was just leading Absent and St. Warrigal, who was three lengths ahead of Claremore. Once over the last fence Claremore drew out to beat Absent by three lengths. St. Warrigal being two lengths away third. Wako King was several lengths away. Mosque, an outsider, led fnwa end to end to win the Summer Cup fro ton Jaloux. They left to a walk-in start, a-iW Mosquebounced out smartly from No. T to lead early from Pezaway, Gustavo, Jaloux, Maori Boy, and Sir Mond. Rounding the home turn Mosque held a .slight ad-

■vantage from Maori Boy. -Gustavo, and Pegaway, with Royal Doulton, Jaloux.and Vertigern next. In the run home Mosque withstood all challenges to score by three parte of a length from Jaloux, who defeated Gustavo by a neck. Maori Boy was right up fourth; and was 1 followed by Lucy Rose, Sir Mond, My Own, and Eager Rose. Gustavo ; improved . considerably upon his first day's running, and only for being checked when making his run on .the rails might have been second. Pegaway found his weight too much at the finish, and Vertigern never looked dangerous.' :

Movie Star won the Criterion Handicap handsomely. ■ Fedora led. into the straight:from Baroscope, Tea Chat, Movie Star and Chief Cook, Movie> Star came away in the ..last: furlong .to beat Tea Chat by a length .and a-half. . Persham was three-parts, of a length away, third, and Baroscope was fourth. The. next to finish yrere Fedora,’ Chief-. Cook, High Comedy and Limeen. ’’ Movie Star, waited on the leaders until reaching the straight and then came through in attractive fashion;

In the Waiteinata Handicap Clopton and Snow Prince showed but early from' Tarcha and Rosshire. With two furlongs covered. ran to the front to dead round the home tUrnv from Clopton, Rosshire, Snow Prince, First Lap, Tambourine and. Appledore. Clopton. and Rosshire overhauled Pakitcre below the distance, and Clopton drew away in the last furlong to heat 'Rosshire by a length.; Pakitere was a neck away, third, and' Gold Lily was fourth. The next to cross: the'line were Snow! Prince, Alloy, Tambourine,. Arrowzone, and Appledore.', Paganelli showed'a return to form' in winning the Electric Handicap, which .was ‘ productive of an interesting finish. The favourites were Chromadyne afad Great Star, Paganelli being at a nice price. Paganelli showed out first from Chromadyne, and with just over, a furlong covered Leitrim ran up on the outside of Paganelli and they were the leaders round, the turn from Chromadyne and Great Star, who were together, with Royal Ruler and Love Song next, and the others bunching. Inside the distance, Leitrim looked like winning .when he was just in front, but Paganelli battled on well and beat him by three parts of a length. Great • Star was a neck away third, and Gold Money ’ was fourth. Then came Courtesy, Royal Ruler. Love Song, Awaken, and Prince Val. Paganelli’s time Imin 12 4-ssee, equals the course' record. ■ , - In the Plunket Handicap, • Silvermine, Refresher, and Royal Tea began best. ißefresher and Eaglet were in front entering the straight from Sir Russell and Silvermine. Once : round the, bend Refresher shook off Eaglet and. veered out slightly, from the rails. Silvermirie then came’ through the opening and finished on strongly, to - defeat Refresher by three parts of a length. Royal Tea was half a length away third, and: Cynthia N. was fourth. Next came Goshawk, High Pitch, Branson, and Grecians Silvermine, responded gamely when Gray, asked him for a final effort. Refresher made a good attempt to win all the way, but found Silvermine a shade too classy; WEIGHTS FOR THIRD DAY. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 29.
