(Per United • Press Association.) BLENHEIM, December 18. The reconstructed cable and telephone system in Marlborough Sounds was formally opened yesterday at the portage. Mr E. F. Healy, the member‘for Wairau, represented the Postmaster-general (Mr J, B. Donald). The improvement puts the settlers in clear communication with all parts of the Dominion. It is expected that it will render the Sounds region much more attractive from the tourist and holiday point of view, and it will also give the same facilities for communication with Sydney and London as the big centres. CHRISTCHURCH, December 18. • Three young men who were concerned in recent burglaries in the city were sentenced to 18 months’ reformative detention by Mr Justice Adams this morning. They were Francis Joseph Miles (aged 19), Walter Rastrick (aged 20), and Eric Frank Hamburger (aged 20), A fourth accused, Clarence Harold Gardener (28 years of age, married), who was associated with the other accused in one offence only, was admitted to probation for two years.
