ESCAPE FROM BANDITS
MISSIONARIES IN, CHINA. CAPTIVES FOR MANY MONTHS. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) HONGKONG, December 17. (Received Dec.. 17, at 11.55 p.m.) A story of hardship and privation during 1C months of captivity by Chinese bandits was told by the Revs. Walter and Fischle, of the Basle Mission, who have reached here following their escape. Since their capture in' August of last year they have been subjected to most trying experiences and exposure often being left on the ground all night long chained at the ankles, and forced to march through the mountain fastnesses of Fukien. Originally a ransom of 2,000,000 dollars was demanded, but this was eventually brought down to 5000. A Chinese magistrate was responsible for their escape, employing an intermediary who fraternised with the guards and won over two or three of them. A dramatic escape was made at night. The missionaries arc now convalescing and intend to return to the mission station at Kaiying.
