(Pkb United Pbess Association.) TE AROHA, December 2, The Te Aroha jubilee celebrations were continued to-day, when the pioneers of the district were entertained at a garden party in the Tourist. Domain. The Minister of Health (Mr A. J. Stallworthy ) represented the Government and addressed the gathering. Messrs C. E. Macmillan and F. Lye,- members of Parliament, also spoke. Many old identities have been attracted from different parts of the Dominion HAWERA, December 2, Resultant on the proposals of the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union, having for their objective the creating of wider interest among farmers in political questions, the Dominion president (Mr W. J. Poison) conferred here to-day with the provincial secretaries of North and South Taranaki and Wanganui. The suggestion to hold a scries of farmers’ meetings, three in each island, was approved, the first to be the Taranaki provincial meeting at Hnwera at an early date. WELLINGTON. December 2.
The steamer Monowai was thrown open to the public yesterday at a charge of 6d a head, the proceeds to go to the Plunkot Society. As a result of this action by the Union Company, the society will benefit to the extent of about £33, 1400 people having gone aboard. Recommendations by the Minister of Defence (Mr J. G. Cobbe) for the reorganising of the defence forces were, it is understood, to be considered by Cabinet this afternoon. When questioned Mr Cobbe said he was not yet in a position to eay what changes were proposed, but indicated that he would make a comprehensive statement early next week. BLENHEIM, December 2. Charged in the Police Court with deserting from the ship Ilia Ora at Wellington on May 14, 1028, a man named Owen Derrick, aged 41 years, pleaded guilty. Sergeant Peterson stated that the Shipping Company did not want the man back. He added that police costs totalling £3 Os 6d had been incurred, and the accused was in a position to pay. Derrick was convicted and fined £2, plus £3 Os Cd costs. CHRISTCHURCH, December 2. Charged with breaking and enterin" a warehouse in Wordsworth street and stealing a quantity of goods, Clarence Harold Gardner (aged 28), Francis Joseph Miles (aged 10), Eric Frank Hamburger (aged 20), and Walter Rastrick (aged 20) pleaded guilty, and wore committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Three of the men also admitted stealing goods from a tobacconist s shop at Addington. Answer! im a plea by counsel, the magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) said: “I don’t want it to get about that men can commit crimes of this sort because they are out of work. It only makes their position worse.”
