THE SALAMAN CASE.

REQUEST FOR RELEASE. INTERESTS OF PATIENTS. (Per United Pees* Association.) ■ WOODVILLE. November 28. A meeting of those interested in the case of Abraham Salaman, called for the Borough Council Chambers last evening, was so largely attended that it was found necessary to take the Alexander Hall to accommodate' those who claimed to have been cured or benefited by Salainan’s treatment. • The > chair was occupied by Mr J. G. Brechin, of Pahiatua, Several well-known settlers spoke of the splendid results attending the treatment they had received at the hands of Salaman, and the following resolution, to be forwarded to the Acting Prime Minister, was carried unanimously:—“That this meeting of those cured from illness, and also those obtaining benefits from treattaent by Mr Salaman, pray the Acting Prime Minister at once to use his great influence with Cabinet to secure the imme-diate-release of Mr Salaman from gaol; that this request is made in the interests' of those patients who are under the care of Mr Salaman,. and are receiving the .utmost benefit from his treatment. Salaman, an Indian herbalist, was sentenced on Monday to 12 months’. imprisonment after, conviction on a charge of manslaughter, arising from the ‘ death- of a diabetic boy, whose mother (as a last resort, counsel claimed) had taken him to Salaman. The -.boy had', been having insulin, and Salaman declined to treat him while he was taking insulin. The mother stopped the. insulin, and the boy was treated by Salaman, but soon passed into diabetic coma and died The Chief Justice, in sentencing Salaman, said: “I canlose, sight of, the fact that this is a plain ease of charlatanism. In giving judgment-in a similar case in the Court of Appeal in. England the judge said that such quacks as the prisoner should not be .allowed to go ‘unpunished. With that opinion • I cordially agree.”
