DRILL HALL CARNIVAL.
TO BE CLOSED TO-DAV. BEAUTY CONTEST AT NIGHT. The remarkably successful exhibition and carnival which has been held during the past two weeks by the Dunedin Manufacturers Association, will reach its conclusion to-night. The carnival, during its comparatively long run, has satisfied the best possible test of its popularity in attractmg large crowds on every day on which it has been - thrown open to the public. If the organisers had any doubts whether the exhibition could continue to attract the large numbers of the opening days they have been banished by the attendances, during the latter part of the week. • The brilliantly lighted hall has, in spite of many other attractions, remained one of the city’s most popular places of amusement, and the committee in charge has stimulated interest by adding new attractions almost nightly. The fact that the proceeds of the carnival are to be devoted to the Cancer Research Campaign Fund has. there can be no doubt, gamed for it a considerable amount of support, bbt had it not been able to provide exceptionally good entertainment such a large measure of patronage could not have been obtained. Public interest is expected to culminate to-night in the attendance of larger crowds than have at any previous time filled the building. A profitable. half-hour can be spent among the displays, of Otago products which the manufacturers have made, and the manner in which they have been prepared should result in a wider knowledge of the manufactures of the province. Greater interest may be expected to centre on the closing night round the amusements, which vary so greatly that something new can always be tried. The tea rooms are sufficiently large 'to cater- for the largest crowd that it likely to attend, and the cabaret is always a popular centre among young people. All the city schools have now sent their contingents of pupils, and yesterday the final ■ visit bv school children was paid, when 250 of the pupils of the Green Island, Fairfield, and Concord Schools were shown round the exhibition. On the band platform last'night a'display of gymnastics was' given by girls between the ages of 11 and' 15 from Mr John Hanna’s School of Physical Culture, and a programme by the Green Island Band followed. The members of the Ladies’ Bowling Association had charge of the sweet stalls, which throughout the duration of the. carnival have been under the direction of Mrs Wakefield Holmes, whose organisation has been largely responsible for their success. To-day the stalls will be In the charge of the Music Circle of the Otago .Women’s Club. The music will be provided by the band of the Ist BatOtago Regiment. A Christmas tree is to be one of the chief attractions in the afternoon. The special attraction for the evening is to ba a beauty contest. A set of 10 portrait frames has been prepared, and 10 entrants will appear in these for a few seconds and then pass on. There will be no entrance fees. Already the committee has had indication that the competition will attract *a great' deal of interest. Thw carnival will be open to-day from 2 to 5.30, and from 6.30 to ll p.m. MINIATURE RIFLE CONTESTS. The Carnival Handicap, which was fired last evening at the Drill Hall,- was the biggest event of■ the miniature rifle meeting which is now drawing to a dose. Over. 120 entries were dealt with, and In consequence of the late hour to which the competition ran it was" not possible to deal with the ties, of which there will be about 40, The balance of the competitors, probably 20 in number, will shoot off at 7 o'dock this evening. Immediately after this the Exhiition Championship will be fired, and it is expected that a start will he made to shoot off the handicap ties at 7.80.
