RELIEF OF DISTRESS.

ACTIVITIES AT MAYOR’S DEPOT: The workers at the Mayor’s relief depot in Dowling street are experiencing a particularly busy time at present, the demands made on their resources being more than usually heavy. Yesterday, from the time the depot opened at 9 o’clock until the final order for foodstuffs was made up, the depot was thronged with those in need of assistance, 103 orders, representing food for about 396 persons, being distributed. During the week 167 orders for 660 persons were ’distributed, and this has resulted in. a severe drain on the resources of the depot. There is an urgent demand for jam and vegetables, and the depot officials make a strong appeal for donations of these articles in order that they might be enabled to give muchneeded assistance to the many deserving cases which come before their notice.
