CLAY BIRD SHOOTING.
SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY I. G_ WATKINS. The South Island Clay Bird Championship was held at the Dunedin Gun Club's grounds, Green Island, yesterday under favourable weather conditions. Representatives of affiliated clubs were present from Central Otago, Timaru, Rangiora, and Southland, and a good ■ number of spectators. In the championshiDevent, 21 clay birds off 18 yards, 1. G. Watkins (Rangiora) and T, Clouston (Lauder) were the highest scorers with- 20 breaks each,, and divided first and Second money. In the shoot off of .a further five birds Watkins broke the required number and won the championship by one bird. Other best scores were:—G; E. Turner, E, P. Graham, E. Lansdell (Southland), and R. MTlwrick (Timaru), 19 birds each, dividing third money. In presenting the championship diamond medal to I. 6. Watkins, Mr G. E. Turner (president of the Dunedin - Gun Club) extended trapshooting congratulations to the winner, and runnerup, both .competitora being tweeted with the customary honours. Mr Watkins suitably responded. Other matches held resulted as follows: — Seventeen Clay Bird Handicap Sweepstake.—G. E. Turner (14yds) 19, R. MTlwrick (18yds) 16, I. G. Watkins .(18yds) 16,' R. M-Donald (12yds) 16, and divided the money. . Twelve Clay Bird Handicap Sweepstake.—G. E. Turner (15yds) 12, E. Lans- t dell (15yds) 12, R. MTlwrick (19vds) 12, I. G. Watkins (X9yds) 12, H. Smellie (Ilyds) 12, T. Clouston (13yds) 12, R. Graham (Ilyds) 12.; In the shoot off, a further the following divided:— E. ' Lansdell, K. MTlwrick, H. ' Smellie, and T.Clogston. In this match it is of special interest that only four birds were missed by the 'total number of competitors, ■ During the afternoon a variation was mode in programme for the purpose of giving .visiting members an opportunity of participating in "skeet/' the latest form pf first-barrel ■ trapshooting.. Out of' 14 birds,/the best Scores resulted:—E. P. Graham 10, - E. 1 Lansdell ‘0; R, MTlwrick 8, H. Smellie 8, T. Clouston 8, I. G. Watkins -7, -R. M‘Dbnald 7. , , The final shoot was a nine-bird mock quail drive sweepstake, and ■ resulted:E. P. Graham 8 breaks, I; G.
