CLUTHA AND MATAU SHOW.

SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE’S DAY. JUDGING OF CATTLE AND HORSES. / : AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY. People’s Day at the Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society's Show at Balclutha 1 yesterday was one of the most successful • in the long history of .the society. The ", ’ "weather was perfect all day, and • in the ; afternoon the show grounds were thronged with visitors from, all parts of Otago, including a great-many from' Dunedin and „ not a few from Southland. * .The catalogue was an excellent one, and, the displays of both Heavy and light horses were among the best ever, seen on this' ground. ■ The idea of postponing the judg- , , mg of cattle and. horses till the second ; day of the show is a good one, this fact being demonstrated yesterday by the keen interest taken in the stock paraded before i-j the jufges. The ringside was crowded from noon on with-, hundreds' of peoptri ■'Yho were bent on tasking the , most j,. the ideal summer sunshine ;that, ; spread' ; a _ warm glow over the grounds alp the • afternoon. “ . ■; _ An interesting prograinme of competi- •;< tiens was carried out, and attracted competitors from as far north as Timaru, and as far south as Invercargill. There was , a .good contingent of Dunedin riders and' •; horses also. The entries in the hunting competitions were exception, up to 1 18 ■ horses competing in a single event. The ; display of horsemanship given by both lady and gentleman riders was warmly appreciated, arid the performances of the , large fields were watched with the keenest ■ interest. The results of the various events are given below. THE CATTLE RINGS. The cattle exhibits generally reached a very fair standard of quality, but com- • petition was absent from many- classes that have, in the past, been well supported at this show. The Jerseys were the strongest numericaliy, and despite a remarkable irregularity in quality and diversity of type, •. they made a good display. The young stock, particularly the heifers, puzzled . the judge with their variety of type, but no described the section as a very credit- • abl ? one. Messrs E. H. Smith (Balclutha) and fl. C. Anderson (Stirling) were the - most prominent exhibitors, and -shared - *ne bulk of the prizes. Mr Smith showed the champion cow and altogether domihated the juvenile classes, Mr Anderson taxing, most of the honours in the bull • aß 7 ell a 8 the b ul! championships. fP“ breeders were represented by some outstanding specimens of the> breed, and exhibited types of young stock that mav +u fleeted to exert great influence oh ?f w bich they are a part. . Ihe Fnesians were a good lot, but in so _ far as there was absolutely no ' *°i? lp .l tlt,on t be section was a weak' one. -All the cattle were from the Ferncla'e stud of Messrs W. Y. Dickie and Sons " . who mqt with exceptional success at the Dunedin Show earlier in the week. Good entries were catalogued in the Ayrshire ' section, but the withdrawal of the Wangaloa breeders, Messrs Bisscl • Bros,, left Mr James Taylor (Stirling) moet undisputed possession of the' field. Mr Thomas Morris (Paretai) was ' . also an exhibitor, and Mr H, G. Cutfaberteon (Paretai) showed a very nice aged line that won him a red ticket as we]l as a championship ribbon. Mr Taylor annexed the female championship, and also secured reserve championship! cards . for both. bulls and cows. He also inj ? mon £ -bis spoils a silver cup offered for the winner of the most points , in the Ayrshire section. The sole representative of the beef shorthorn breed was. a sire exhibited by Mr A. C. Begg (Pukeawa), and bred by Mr J/ A. Johnstone,' of Bushcy Park. This bull is proving an excellent breeder of quality beef cattle, specimens of which were to be seen in the fat cattle pens, There was a large entry of crossbred and general dairy cattle of a very ueefultype, and there was keen' competition for the awards. . ' The fat cattle section was one of the finest assembled at any show in Otago or Southland of ■ recent years. The quality was excellent, and the numbers were unusually large. The value of the Stirling district as grazing country for fat cattle is indicated by the large entry of stock from that corner of the country. Messrs Barton’s Ltd. raise some exceptionally good stock there, and made a marked impression on the judge with the selection paraded yesterday. Mr A. C. Begg (Pukeawa) was another successful exhibitor, showing many fine types, and Mrs A. J Bell, Mr J. P. Bell, both ofStirling, and Mr Alexander Renton (inch Clutha) were also in the picture. HORSES, There was an entry of between 60 and .70 draught horses of all sorts and the , judges expressed satisfaction with the general standard of quality. The Clutha and Matau Society is to be congratulated upon following the lead of the'Royal Agricultural Society in the matter of the appointment of young men as judges, Mr J. B. Blair of Outram, was yesterday associated with Mr Simon Fleming, of Cfooketon, in the judging of the heavy horse classes. Too many. societies lose sight of the fact that death, retirement, i or. advancing years are/ continually reducing the number of those breeders able to ■ remain on t&e judge’s panel. The result is that the work of judging at metro- , pojitan and provincial' shows is annually being shouldered by a smaller company of enthusiasts, while the younger men are

denied, the - opportunities for qualifying at provincial shows. Mr Blair made his “rat appearance-yesterday in the showring'in the capacity of judge; arid demonstrated the soundness-of -the principle of encouraging the_ younger generation to take the keen - interest in stud heeding which alone makes a good judge. .The champion entire was found in the aged . stallion class, Mr John Young’s (Alianton) Brunstane Duplicate being chosen for the honour, with one of his yearling sons close behind him as reserve champion. The champion mare was _ also an Alianton entry, Mr Young scoring the reserve championship also, and a large share of the class awards in the-breeding section. There was a very fair entry of fillies from three years down, the pick of the bunch being a stylish, well-bred three-year-old which'won a red ticket for Mr J. R. M'Kinnon -(Clinton}. Mr R. G. Lockhart was another sue--cessful exhibitor. His class awards weremany and he was as prominent in ,the working draught section ae in the breeding classes. Among his laurels was the silver cup for the most points, in breeding classes, the entries to, be bred by the exhibitor! Mr John Young, took the open points prize. Messrs /Allison Bros. (Clarksville) made their customary diatiactive display of. geldings and working draughts., and secured,'many prizes. Mr J F. Thomson (Balchitha) showed a fine specimen of 10 cwt. spring carter, which was in perfect condition and strikingly turned out for a horse continually at work. The light horse sections were all good. The entries were remarkable in many cases. As many as 14 and 18 horses were parad_ed,..in some classes, and the had; no easy', task separating thebest qf them. The entries' in the caddie: horse/classes totalled 'about 120,-and ponies and hackneys were also numerous, Mr J. M. Shaw, of Washdyke; was in the first flight of prize-winners. ■ His 11stone hack, ■ Geordie, was first in its , class/ arid besides winning the championship, was adjudged the best-paced horse, , e , best lady’s hack, arid the best type of hunter on the ground. Mies Greenslade (Dunedin) was also well up in the hat tff successful exhibitors, and Miss Statham (Dunedin). Miss K. Wood (Beaumont), Mr W. Telford (Otanomomo), • Messrs. Calder and Cochrane. (Awamangu) Messrs W. and J. Hazlett (Lumsden), Mr A. A J6pp (Mount Allan), Mr A, Macdonald (Lumsden)and the Carterhope Estate also .shared in the distribution of prize money. Mr ; T. H. Ivey (Timaru) showed tne chUmpion harness horse, and the pony championship went to Mr W. Roberts (Clinton). . The gate takings for the day amounted to £225, a record for the :socicty. ' PRIZE LIST.
