SPEEDWAY ROYAL.

Considerable interest has been displayed since the first announcement was made of the opening of the broadsiding season, at the Speedway Royal, and many were disappointed when the management was forced to postpone the opening on account of the weather. Satisfactory arrangements have now been made for the meeting to be run off to-night, when the same riders will appear in the many events previously arranged. During the short season last year, when broadsiding was first introduced, speedway enthusiasts turned oiit In large numbers to witness really enjoyable meetings, and the coming season should prove to be an even greater success. Among the big events will be the visit ,pf the English riders, which will be the first of its kind since the speedway racing was started in the Dominion. Australian broadsiders will also be in evidence at each meeting during the season. A big programme of events has been arranged for to-night. Chief interest will no doubt .centre around the appearance of the popular rider, Harry Maugham,, who has just returned from England, and also the special engagement of the international star, Ben Unwin, who has made himself famous on Australian, English, and French tracks. Besides appearing in the A Grade Handicap, Mangham and Unwin will try conclusions in a special match race of three heats, each of four laps, from rolling starts, which should prove to be an exciting tussle. Another important event will be the big points scratch races from rolling starts between three local riders—Dusan Miller, Jim Nesbit, and Cyril Hasler—who have been showing excellent form when at practice. Local boys are showing considerable interest and a decided improvement. The B Grade Handicap will include Peter Dyders, “Stoney” Homer, Gordon Brown, “Bunny” Henning, “Bill” Grieve, Harry Williams; Stanley Ravenswood, and Allan Bain, all mounted on special dirt track machines. Jack Young will also be seen in action on his new Douglas, which has been running well at the practices, together with three Wellington men.
