“THE MESSIAH.”
An oratorio has been defined as “a dramatic poem, usually of a sacred character, sung throughout by solo voices and chorus to the accompaniment of a full orchestra, but, at least in modern times, without the assistance of scenery, dress, or action.” The “ Messiah,” by George Frederic Handel, is an oratorio answering this definition. It is one of the, if not the most outstanding of all the sacred l oratorios. The words are selected from the Old and New Testaments. The arrangement of such is truly remarkable. These have been set to music for four soloists, chorus, and orchestra, as only a master musician such as Handel could do. It is an immortal work. Though Handel wrote several other compositions, bis name is especially associated with the “Messiah.” It is nearly 100 years since it was first produced, yet to-day it is still a great favourite all over the Englishspeaking world. Performances are given annually over a world-wide area. Those who do not possess any technical musical knowledge look forward to listening to the beautiful solos and soul-stirring choruses, accompanied by an efficient orchestra. This oratorio will be given in the Town Hall on Tuesday next at 7.45 p.m. by the Dunedin Choral Society. The box plan arrangements are advertised. f
