EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE.
LOCAL BRANCH TO BE FORMED. Having as its chief object the encouragement of support of local industries, the Empire Service League already has strong branches in Amberiey, North Canterbury, and Greymouth, and an effort is being made to establish branches throughout New Zealand. -Mrs'J. HotchMn, the general secretary of the league, has been visiting Dunedin during the past few days with the object of enrolling members and as a result has gained for the organisation 170 supporters, a large number of whom are children. She will leave for the north to-day, but will return early in the new year, the present time being considered inopportune for further work. The league, whose object, broadly speakis to support all reasonable efforts to improve the moral and material conditions of life in the Dominion, aims at a very large' membership. Already its roll contains 1300 names, but tbe movement is stated by Mrs Hotchkin to’ be in its very early stages, and besides establishing brandies in all large centres it is hoped to have branches in all tbe ’schools. Finance, is the main difficulty in the'meantime, and an increase in membership is relied upon to enable the league to extend its operations. Mrs Hotchkin states that she has had requests to visit Central Otago, but she cannot do so immediately. Her next visits are to be to Timaru, Temuka, and Ashburton. The league has the support of the Returned Soldiers’ Associations and Dominion manufacturers. ■
