ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

CHATHAM CUP FINAL. PORT CHALMERS DEFEATS NORTHERN. A fair number of spectators attended at Logan Park, when Northern and Port Chalmers played off for the local Chatham Cup final. Few, if any of the spectators present expected that the Fort Chalmers team, which occupies the bottom position on the championship table, would beat Northern after the latter’s fine display against Seacliff the previous week, but the young lads from the Port kept the ball on the move at such an amazing pace that Northern never looked like winning at any stage of the game. Although playa man short in the final 20 minutes, they increased their spore by a couple of goals. The football displayed was poor, but nevertheless wae full of interest,' due mainly to the manner in which the Port players kept on the ball and frequently left their opponents nou-plussed by the rapidity of their tackling. The game was a double event, counting for both the Fletcher Cup and Chatham Cup competitions. Port Chalmers will now represent the district in the South Island final of the Chatham Cup. which will be played at Dunedin on August 16. against the Western Club, of Christchurch. Port Chalmers kicked off, a series of throw-ins marking the opening _ stages until Scouler forced a corner-kick tor Northern. From the kick across Westlake missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring. Port worked play down the left side. E. Albertson, on the wing, dallied with the ball too long, and his cross to the right brought about an unsuccessful corner. Thomson, at full-back for Northern was miskicking badly, and Latta made good use'nf the chances offering, but his shot to goal was cleared by M'Quarrie. Northern* gave no signs of settling down, and Hutchison took the ball down the centre of the field, and sent out to C. Ives on the right wing, the latter scoring with a good shot. Port Chalmers I goal. Northern nil. Perry and -Sutherland were prominent iff opening up play for the Northern forwards, but the latter could make no headway against the smart tackling of the Port full-backs, Evans and W. Albertson, who were very safe. A break away by the Port forwards, in which Latta and C, Ives were prominent, ended in the latter's shot being returned by Thomson. Sutherland passed on to Faithful, and the winger went on to test Camp, but the Port custodian was safe. The ball eventually went to Perry, whose long drive sailed over the crossbar. Play was of an uninteresting nature. Northern rarely got going owing to the speedy work of the Port players, who smothered up all attempts of the Black and Whites to work up combination. Before half time Northern forced a couple of corners, but the defence again proved better than the attack, and play was transferred to the other end, where handling by G. Ives spoilt a promising movement. At half time play was in midfield. At the commencement of the second half play was mostly in favour of the Port team, the bustling tactics of the players upsetting the Northern side. Good work by Westlake placed Northern in an attacking position, a nice pass giving Secular a shot' at goal, which Camp saved well. Smith initiated a further advance, but was robbed of the ball at midfield by B. Ives,. who passed well . downfield to C. Ives. The winger beat Thomson, and a, fine centre enabled Hutchison ito score with a good header. Port 2 goals, I Northern nil. Northern made repeated efforts to break through, but the attacks 1 were disjointed and the Port backs, Evans j and W. Albertson, were playing soundly, Evans wae knocked out, but play proceeded, and Thomson drove the ball to Scoular, whose shot Camp partially saved. Following a scramble in the goalmouth, the ball was netted. Fort 2 goals, Northern 1 goal. Both teams were now swinging the ball about. Northern showing to better advantage, but the speedy tackling of the Port rearguard kept them from scoring. At this stage the Port left-half, Montgomery, who had been playing a fine game, received a kick from one pi bis own players, and had to, be - carried off with a broken leg. With one player short, Port continued to make the play lively, and, following a throw in in Northern’s area, the ball was sent towards the goal, where M'Quarrie saved Holden’s shot, but Hutchison caught the rebound and scored his second goal. Fort 3 goals. Northern 1 goal. Northern attacked from the restart, and forced Evans to concede a corner kick, from which M'Hugh netted following a good kick - by j Faithful. Port 3 goals. Northern 2 goals. Northern was now forcing the play, but | Camp cleared a shot from Faithful, and another went over the bar. In the last minute of the game Port held the advantage, a fine snot by A. Ives being narrowly saved by M'Quarrie. From the clearance the ball was returned to goal with a high shot. Hutchison, the Port centre-forward, being illegally tackled by the Northern hacks. Port Chalmers was awarded a penalty. However, instead of allowing the kick to be taken, the referee blew his whistle for time. Mr F. 6. Smith was in charge of the game, which ended: — Port Chalmers 3 goals. Northern 2 goals.

FLETCHER CUP

The results of the othey games played leaves the position regarding the premier team still in doul}t, .Technical having dropped a father point by drawing with Mornington. The Technical team lack the dash and combination shoivn earlier in the season, the backs end halves being inclined to Avait on the ball instead of going to it. Mornington kicked off, and a forward movement was cleared by Cope, who let his forwards away. Technical kept Mornington in their OAvn half for some time, but Eankin, in goal, saved some good shots. Mornington broke away on the left wing, Connolly playing well down past the Technical backs. Holden came out to clear, but several players collided. Lament eventually clearing and relieving the position. Holden was temporarily disabled owing to having received a kick in the mix-up. Up-and-doivn play continued for some time until Technical forced a corner. Hector played well across the centre, giving Witchall a chance to open the score. Technical 1 goal, Mornington nil. Technical kept Mornington hard pressed, but the latter’s goalie was safe. Donaldson, Mornington’s right-back, placed down to one of his forwards, the ball bursting as the latter stopped il. The half time AA’histle sounded simultaneously. From the start of the second half, Mornington tried hard to equalise, but the Technical backs cleared well. The Technical halves were slow on the ball, the Morpington halves nipping in repeatedly. and placing well dorm to the wing, Holden, in Technical's goal, was called upon to save several good shots in quick succession. Technical broke away several times, but the greasy ground and ball spoilt several good scoring opportunities. With about eight minutes to go Mornington went aAvay on the left wing, and a good centre was snapped up by Young, who opened the score for Mornington. Mornington 1 goal. Technical 1 goal. MOSGIEL.v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS.

Playing on the Oval against Mosgiel, High Schqol Old Boys were unfortunate on many occasions in not scoring. Mosgiel scored twice in the first half. _bhl added a third goal in the second. Even play was seen in the-first half, and there were a few glimpses of what might be conBidered good combined footbaU, considering the greasy state 01 the ball. The backs on both sides put in some clever work. The first goal came when the Mosgiel right-winger centred across the goalmouth to start a scramble, from which White back-heeled into the goal. Mosgiel 1 goal. Old Boys nil. The right-winger again drove-the ball over to «White, who. from a good position in the open, goaled for the second time. Mosgiel 2 goals. Old Boys nil. .... , School showed up better in the second half, and had it not been for the quickness of M'Dougall, in the Mosgiel goal, must have scored more than once.
