OBITUARY
MR J. KARETAI. Mr Joseph Karetai, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of Otaken, passed away in Dunedin on Monday after a brief illness at the age of 73 years. * Mr Karetai, who was born .in the Otakon district, was a son of the late Mr Timoti Karetai, and a grandson of the chief Karetai, one of the leading Maori chiefs in the South, Island in the very early days. He was educated at the Otakon School, and then took ip farming pursuits, which he followed for the remainder of his life. He took a loading part in the affairs of the district for a long time, and for many years was a member of the Otago Heads Road Board and the Otakon School Committee. He was u member of the Masonic fraternity for many years, and was a member of the Loyal Kilwinning Lodge, Portobello. Mr Karetai married a Miss EdmondS, who died on December 20, 1929. The funeral will take place at 2 o’clock to-morrow.
